Parnate mechanism, aside from MAOI?

Posted by Astrid on September 20, 2018, at 22:37:52

Hello,

I'm wondering if somebody is aware of the mechanism behind Parnate besides the obvious MAOI mechanism? I find it provides me with a very stimulating and focusing effect for the first 1-2 hours after I take it, and I'm having difficulty with trying to "strategically" dose my prescription such that I can maximize my study time but also wanting to do well at work (I'm in school and work 30+ hours per week). I never experienced this with Nardil, and the effect is short-lasting, which makes me feel like there is something else going on besides the MAOI effects.

Bonus points if you can help me find a way to SLEEP. I'd be ecstatic just to sleep five hours a night at this point. My lifelong buddy, Trazodone, just isn't cutting it anymore. I also refuse to use benzos/z-drugs, after enough struggling on and off with that crap.

hi. --if-- i remember correctly, one effect of this drug is that parnate functions like an amphetamine. I think some of it may actually be metabolized into amphetamine.

back in the day, psychiatrists used antipsychotics to help patients simmer down from parnate stimulation. i don't know if its the best idea, but...maybe seroquel at night? gabapentin?

other than that...how's the depression going? I think some psychiatrists are still OK with stimulants with Parnate, now and then. I"d be scared to take that combination, personally.

good luck. :-)

Is Seroquel safe with MAOI regarding serotonin syndrome? Psychiatrists have told me conflicting things about this

oh...wow...I dunno, honestly. good thing I'm not writing prescriptions, LOL. i Just thought seroquel because it has a better EPS+TD profile than the older drugs and even many other 'atypicals.' but...

perphenazine? the old combo pils used stelazine which...seems like a really -bad- idea to me (stelazine has a high akathisia, high eps, high td risk), but...whatevs.

are all the 'atypicals' a problem with maois? risperidone is kind of sedating, but also mind numbing.

good catch, lamdage...

Hello! Yes it certainly feels amphetamine-ish for the first hour or so after I take it, which really helps me crunch out some work. I suppose afterwards I could just keep it going with coffee. I've been reading at doses of 60mg+ it also acts as a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. I'll talk to my doctor about it and see how much she's willing to boost me up. I know I can handle that much because I've done it on multiple occasions but I kind of need her agreement to be able to do it long-term.

I'm quite sure low doses of seroquel are completely fine with MAOIs. I swear pharamacists will overreact to any *possible* interaction, however unlikely it is. The key is just to take a dose for sleeping. I don't know about seroquel though, I had a few weird experiences with it where it just make me more anxious although maybe those were just abnormal situations. Anyway, thanks for your insight! My depression is much better while on Parnate but I need to figure out a way to take it so that I can go to school and work and get an okay amount of sleep! Aside from the sleep I haven't had many side effects except for the initial anxiety/agitation, which didn't bother me so much, and it also made me nauseous/caused lost of appetite...so I lost a bunch of weight :) I'm okay with that one. Well, I was starting to worry about losing TOO much weight but my appetite seems to be coming back.

If you take some Seroquel i think that will counter the weight loss.

I've been taking parnate for a few years now and the insomnia wore off after a year or so. At the beginning, I would literally be up all night as if I were buzzing on a few cups of coffee. I did, for a few weeks, take a low dose of seroquel and that knocked me out. But the insomnia/speedy effect will go away. Your body just adjusts, I think.
