What do you think about Vortioxetine?

Posted by fido on January 29, 2015, at 19:08:06

Is it better and really different than other SSRI or is it basically the same old garbage?
They advertise the drug and make it look like it affects so many different serotonin receptors and it also does this and also does that. It sounds good, but the question is does this really make a difference in patients?
I really don't know if I should try it. Lexapro totally failed me at 20mg.
I am angry that this is supposed to be the great innovation. How long will they keep making new SSRIs?

I wish there were other different ADs coming out really soon but it seems like they are still years away and I needed something which works NOW.

Hmmm, vortioxetine's SSRI-like effect is indeed its most potent effect, but it does act at various serotonin receptors as well. The 5-HT1a partial agonism may be useful for both depression and anxiety, but may cause dizziness and nausea. 5-HT7 antagonism may increase the antidepressant effect.

Overall, efficacy seems to be similar to SSRIs, but this doesn't mean it won't be better (or worse) for individual patients. The risk of sexual side effects is probably lower than with SSRIs.

I think vortioxetine is a more novel choice than yet another plain SSRI, but time will tell how useful it will really be.

But what scares me about it is that there are no long term studies. It's like the patients who now take this are guinea pigs. What if they find out in the future that it's dangerous?

I don't think it's so novel that there will be anything highly unexpected.

I'm taking Brintellix and the one thing I can say that separates it from the rest of of the SSRIs is how rapidly it works. It works especially well for anxiety, as it is a full agonist of the 5ht1a receptor and an antagonist of the 5ht1d and 5ht3 receptors.

I've defitely had a better response to Brintellix than I've had other SSRIs.
