Hi there,

There are two main groups who may need vitamin B-12 supplements:

1. Vegans. Vitamin B-12 is obtained through animal products. As a result, vitamin B-12 tablets may be needed to prevent deficiency.

2. Those who are not able to absorb it properly. This can cause a condition called pernicious anaemia.

Another group who may occasionally need supplementation is heavy alcohol drinkers.

Vitamin B-12 deficiency can be diagnosed based on a complete blood count in combination with a vitamin B-12 level (and a check of folic acid level if appropriate).

The dose and type of vitamin B-12 taken depends on the situation. Vegans can absorb the vitamin normally and take a low strength of tablets. Those with a malabsorption condition are usually treated with the injectable form of B-12.

If you are not deficient (or vegan), I wouldn't advise taking vitamin B-12 on its own. It would be a lot more sensible to take a vitamin B complex with all the B vitamins... since they are all need for normal function of the brain and nervous system.

I honestly didn't know this. Thanks. So what if B complex seems to make one anxious or is it not so just in ones mind. Thanks as my diet isn't varied as should be. PJ

Hi PJ,

>So what if B complex seems to make one anxious

Some B complex products contain extremely high doses. If you have side effects, you will still be able to take a low dose if your diet is not very varied. You should not have any side effects from taking 'recommended daily allowance' level supplements.

I just bought some methylcobalamin as a source of B12 to treat my bipolar depression. I plan to take 2500 micrograms a day as a lozenge to be dissolved in the mouth.

Hope it helps Scott. Have you had any blood tests? You might also be interested in my post about saffron above. It's been tried alone and as an add-on to antidepressants.

I take all the B's! B-100. fairly cheep. Realy helped a lot in the begginning, thats when I noticed the most difference. Still take it everyday, few years now. Can't remember what exactly it did in the begginning. Think it undepressed me and felt a lot better. Starts working right away. You should try it.

I also take a high dose of folic acid, B9. Because I had a serious defficience in it a while back. this is the same drug as deplin that every one was on a while back, just a lot cheeper.

I'm assuming I need the B's because of my alcohol consumption.

A recent blood test showed it to be a little low.

I am very interested. I never heard about it before.

Thanks for your spending so much time helping me and everyone else.

Oh right, well it makes sense that it might help then. There's a theory that measuring serum B12 (alone) might not be a very good way of detecting deficiency in some people... and that neurological symptoms may occur in milder deficiency than is generally appreciated.

Have you ever had B12 injections?

I hadn't until very recently. Strange that it's not discussed more. I was thinking it might be because most trials were not performed in English-speaking countries, but then that also applies to a variety of other herbal medicines discussed much more widely. Saffron is used most frequently in Iran, it seems.

I've been taking 1000mcg b12 and I do think it can help with energy, although it's effects have seemed to wear off a little. I'll probably try a higher dose. Make sure you get the "methycobalalim" version and not the cyanocoballalim

You should buy a small amount of brand z just to take in an emergency. Its cheeper than going to the hospital. and better than death.

That's a good idea. It would be like a safety net for you. It would be good to have there for an emergency, even if you are taking generic olanzapine (Zyprexa) or a different antipsychotic the rest of the time.
