Is Prozac at low dosages still activating?

Posted by Franz on December 26, 2012, at 12:23:20

Hello. I can´t tolerate the tinnitus from 10 mg fluoxetine so I am considering 2.5-5 mg
I tried escitalopram at low dosages but found it sedating and also affecting tinnitus.
Prozac is known to be more stimulating but is it also at low dosages?
Thanks

Hello Franz! I am taking below 5mg of prozac before my menses. I take it at bedtime with my usual daily dose of .5mg klonopin. I sleep well, and feel relaxed after I take it.

Hi gadchik. Glad to know it works for you!.
I took 5 mg this morning and after midday and eating I slept and now I feel more calm, like less ruminating.

I never heard of taking it at night.

How low can you go on the dose and still have an effect?

Thanks.

Gadchik it doesn't make you anxious? Seriously as the first ever tried at 20mg and felt good energy day one day two anxiety, day three total panic when out new and flushed them down the toilet. At the time was working and feeling good the doc pleaded with me to take it every three days. What I don't get in your case is how if it lasts for two weeks and for menstral isn't it in your body most of the month? Phillpa

I was instructed to take a small piece of the 10mg prozac pill, on the first day that I start to feel anxious before my menses. I am only to take it one day. My pdoc said it will slowly leave my body over 2 weeks time. She wanted me to take a small piece off of the 20mg pill, but I insisted on the 10mg. The ssris only cause anxiety in me if I take the regular dose that most take. I always have to start real low and slowly work my way up. However, with the prozac, I will not be working my way up. I may actually take a whole 5mg next menses tho!

I believe my pdoc said this is something new they are doing with prozac...trying small doses, and also, not taking it everyday of menses, since it will slowly leave the body, and hopefully,no withdrawal.

I'd suggest trying another SRI in an effective dose (sertaline 50mg or Effexor 75mg) or another class of antidepressant (Welbutrin 300mg)
Prozac at 2.5mg is likely to do 3/5 of 5/8 of f*ck all, it'd be like taking 1/4 of an aspirin for a headache

Supposed to work great for PMS. I'd think the less the best in your case. Phillipa

yes, lower doses for pms. i also believe lower doses can work for depression, did for me. I think more people could tolerate ssris if they started lower doses, instead of getting all these side effects from the higher doses

Thanks for the suggestion jono, but it is not so easy. I tried many and side effects, tinnitus, sedation, etc made them difficult to keep.

Maybe I could try tianeptine (expensive) or mirtazapine (which seems not to cause tinnitus, but I am not sure how it works)

Dr told me wellbutrin woul be too anxiogenic or irritating for me, but who knows.

I just read an article in the January issue of Oprah magazine that people are trying smaller doses of antidepressants(5mg prozac, 12.5mg zoloft, etc),and they work well for some without the side effects.

Interesting I wonder also what the doctors now know that they didn't know in the past as mine says the same thing. P

That seems to be the trend here as well. Lower doses of meds. Phillipa

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=120227

" When one of my patients got psychotic in 1988 after just three doses of Prozac, I searched the medical literature. I'd prescribed her the standard 20-mg dose that the drug rep assured me was the lowest, safest dose. Yet I found a large study, conducted by Prozac's manufacturer, showing that just 5 mg -- 75% less medication -- helped 54% of patients.9 But this information was omitted from the package insert, PDR, advertising, or rep's info."

Franz that's what happened to me three doses of 20mg of prozac when new and mind you had no depression or anxiety was taking a mere .125mg of xanax a day and on third day was frozen in panic. That day the pills got flushed down the toilet. Took three days to literally come down off the prozac. Was the beginning of med phobia Phillipa
