Two tricyclics in combination

Posted by sk85 on June 23, 2012, at 4:25:11

Has anyone tried this? And was it wise from a side-effects point of view? I'm thinking of combining low dose clomipramine with a low dose imipramine.

I have never heard of this being done, even as far back as 1982. Of course, this doesn't mean that it hasn't been. I would think that clomipramine and imipramine were too much alike to be worth combining. However, combining desipramine and nortriptyline would have a rationale of sorts. At one time, it was thought that if an individual were responsive to one drug, they would be unlikely to be responsive to the other. The two drugs just might be complementary. The other drug that might be worth a look at is trimipramine. It is not a reuptake inhibitor as are the other tricyclics. Perhaps you could combine it with the TCA that has worked best for you.

The only way I would think that this could be done is ... like take example...Desipramine and Amitriptyline one for serotonin and the other NE [desipramine] ... its kinda like having the same thing as Wellbutrin with Zoloft.

But still some docs are paranoid about using these together...the thing to worry about is not combing the same nuerotransmitter sites from both to result in serotonin syndrome. Like taking Paxil and Prozac together for a couple weeks...

That's not a bad idea. Good thinking. I would say that combining desipramine or nortriptyline with Zoloft, Lexapro, or Effexor makes some sense. If one were to use Prozac or Paxil along with a TCA, the dosage of the TCA must be cut in half. For a time, I had some luck with nortriptyline + Effexor.

By the way, you seem to be mentally energetic lately. How have you been feeling?

Wouldn't the weight gain be great on two tricyclics? I remember watching those on them when volunteering to be substantial in a short period of time week by week as I was in the volunteer position weekly. Phillipa

hey scott, im fine....just doing my own thing...i havent used methamphetamine for a couple days now...its nasty, makes me get desperate to get more of it...it wears out your brain, makes you lose dopamine...causing depression if you don't have it. Of course if I took it through a presciption like Desxoyn...about 25mg twice daily I would be fine...but its not gonna happen with the situation im in right now. Theirs this site called abovetheinfluence.com...really its cool im checking it out. Anyways my meds a still a sitting duck...im having to teach myself how to have natural stimulation from life instead of coffee and amphetamines. I still smoke alot...but yea..

thanks for askin;)

combining two serotonergic drugs isnt very common. most docs are so afraid of liability. Maybe your doc would be open to doing it at small doses of both?
If you were to try something like desipramine with another TCA, that would probably be easier to get.
