how do you tell a doctor about your illness

Posted by rjlockhart04-08 on January 17, 2012, at 15:53:56

I've thought about this. See before I saw my doctor I told her I had much sadess and I had crying spells and I had "thoughts" of suicide. Not suicidal thoughts, but just the "thought" of it. I can't do it. I want to preseve my life and not end everything. ButI still do think about it. But FINALLY she did something. Usally she would not change my meds and left me misderable.

There's got to be way to tell your doctor correctly about whats going on for them to take it seriously and not brush it off. One thing I have learned is NEVER tell a doctor what medication you would like to be on. You have to describe through eleboration of what your suffering from and that it preventing you from functioning. Sometimes even if you tell them that, they just say "deal with it" go to a therpist. It depends on the doctor.

But in my case before I go into the session I put together what Im going to talk about and go over and try to rerember it like a speech. You have to bring eleboration and how it effeccts your daily life. I do know somethings. But I would love to hear wisdom from someone else. The amount suffering I am going through is high, but I choose to live and find a solution for all this. What are some strong points that should tell a doctor or in this case my doctor. Someone please help me put together what I should say and how I should say it. That's what it depends on is saying it in influenceing correct manner

List your symptoms. Make the list list simple and straightforward.

1. Sadness
2. Suicidal Ideation
3. Crying

...etc.

What do you want to say to your doctor about your stimulant use?

But you seem to want stimulants to treat what sounds like depression and stimulants have a bad track record with depression, usually poop out very quickly once you build tolerance. If anti-depressants aren't working, maybe therapy is the answer. You talk about therapy like it's a punishment, but it can be incredibly helpful. Of course, if you enter therapy and talk continually about finding the medical "fix", the therapist will try to move you in another direction. But that's the point. It has always seemed to me that your problem is (1) an addictive personality that leads to drug-seeking behavior; (2) an over-reliance on parents/family to care for you; (3) low self-esteem which makes you think of yourself as slow-witted, unable to care for self.

Therapy is the only thing that will really help with this.

If she would even listen maybe that I will take them like she prescibes. But I know really I would take more than I should. I do that with everything. Anything that will benefit me and not cause negative symptoms I will proably will do it. You know its so depressing to even talk about this. I even right now feel doomed and I will always be this the rest of my life. I mean when I get out some of my emotions it feels good, because I feel relieved. But this is like traffic, it builds up because I have one way thinking. I need to change it and stop focusing on how sh*tty my life is. Iit's very hard too eric.

I mean I've already thought of plans of what I will do If I do even get prescibed stimulants. Get a combination lock safe. I will never figure out the code unlike having a key which can be opened if I access the correct key. I have already done this in the past. If I just had another chance but I don't even want to look forward to that because I know would eventually get the inciative to start using the incorrect way. I have made times where I would agree not to abuse me medication and it would last about 3-6months and then I would go back to the same pattern. I rerember when I took Vyvanse two 70mg daily and then went to Dexedrine Span. 60mg...it was at the correct dose I just HATED the rebound period. That's why I used alcohol and benzodiapines to make this "washed" out feeling smoothen out. I did this for years. I hate alcohol in the first place, the only reason Ii used because it had sedating effects to counteract the rebound period. While I live in my parents I can never take a stimulant.

And whats worse now I do have anxiety without stimulants. And I deal with a new range of problems that have started because I discontinued stimulants. Causing me to feel doomed and not being able to go back to school. Now all I can do is apply myself without performance enhanced medications. It's a choice, choose to stay sad, or choose to be happy. I've told everything that I can so I hope this makes some sense ;)

Matt

I think changing your life would help, but I don't know how to get you there. That's what helped me...well, that and going batsh!t crazy. That helped, too.

I think you might want to try therapy, maybe group therapy. Hobbies would be good. If you end up getting disability, you could use that time to explore parts of your world that you've left unexplored because of your drug use and subsequent obsession with drugs. There's a lot more to life than pills and shrinks. I think I've said this to you before...maybe not.

Stimulating drugs like amphetamine arent well suited to treating depression because tolerance builds. Some people say adding memantine helps with tolerance. Ive never tried it so I cant say for sure.
Even wellbutrin pooped out on me. Makes me wonder if these reuptake inhibitor or releaser drugs (especially those that boost catecholamines) become ineffective since theres a feedback mechanism in the brain. Too much neurotransmitter, back off on number of receptors so youre back to square one.
Might be better to try another approach. What about dopamine receptor agonists?
I hope youre not in the trap where hypomania is the 'norm' youre shooting for. Its not sustainable.

Do you find Narcotics Anonymous meetings helpful? You are making a big effort to go.
