nortriptyline is stimulating for me at low dose.

Posted by stann on December 7, 2011, at 11:30:16

I am taking 10mg of Nortripyline. It has been about seven day sinse I started taking it. It has already cause me to have insomnia. So,last night I took my dose at 5pm.About an hour after taking it I was overly stimulated and found it difficult to talk to a friend on the phone. I did sleep a little better though. I am wondering if anyone might know if the stimulating effect will go away with time or not.Or, if increasing the dose will make it less stimulating. I know most people feel sedated with this medicine.

Thanks

Its your call, but could you try something else? I personally would be concerned about being over-stimulated early on in treatment. Sometimes other drugs are given--low-dose antipsychotics, benzos--to counter agitation and anxiety, but I'd personally want to find something more tolerable instead of medicating away side effects.

What sort of stimulating effect are you experiencing? How do you feel? Nervous, alert, difficulty sleeping?

I have tried pretty much everything, and this does concern me in a big way that overstimulation is ocuring so soon and at such a low does.I likly will not put myself through the pain of continueing with this med. I have been taking clonazepam at bed time for years and when needed imovane. The imovane and clonazepam barly does anything when I take nortrip at bedtime.

I have difficulty sleeping especially if I take nortrip at bed time. I feel nervouse and more anxiety. Today I am feeling a little confused and I think my thought process is being hamperd as well. Could be from the lack of sleep though. I also inject Testosterone enanthate which increases my anxiety. Between the two I am Jacked up.

Are you on any other medication or just nortriptyline?

Response to tricyclic antidepressants is very variable. Individuals metabolise tricyclics at wildly different rates.

You could try taking nortriptyline in the morning instead, at a lower dose such as 5mg. Alternatively, you could try a more sedating antidepressant.

>I also inject Testosterone enanthate which increases my anxiety.

Is this prescribed by an endocrinologist?

I take 0.5mg clonazepam at bed time and the occasional imovane for sleep. Yes,the T enanthate is prescribed by an endo. I took my nortrip at 5pm yesterday instead of at bedtime. I felt very wound up last night.Plus, a lot nervousess. It was very unpleasent .Today I felt worse as well.I felt very uneasy.I am not sure what 5mg would do to me.Probably the same thing just a little less of it.

I think you should speak to your doctor about stopping nortriptyline for now. Have you tried any other tricyclic antidepressants?

Thanks for your input ed_uk2010.I have tried other tricyclics. Before the nortrip I tried clomipramine. I talked with my Doctor this morning and she wants me to wash-out the nortrip and then start on low dose of amitriptyline.

A proportion of amitriptyline is converted to nortriptyline in the liver. Amitriptyline is much more likely to cause sedation than nortriptyline. Amitriptyline is best started at a very low dose eg. 10mg, or even 5mg given your response to nortriptyline. You can then increase the dose as tolerated.

Thanks for this information ed_uk2010. Do you have any idea how long is long enough to wash-out the nortrip. I was only on it for seven nights at 10mg.

Thanks

Just wait until the adverse effects resolve, which will probably be in a couple of days.
