I hear Public Mental Health

Posted by Christ_empowered on November 30, 2011, at 11:05:10

Really. I do. The no benzos under any circumstances rule kinda sucks, but other than that...awesome. They're professional, they're courteous, they've even got me hooked up with vocational rehab. Vocational rehab is talking about some sort of computer training to get me situated in a good job eventually. Awesome, right?

Plus, they deal with severe cases. And they at least pay lip service to the Recovery Model, which is more than I can say for the private practice shrinks I've seen, where therapeutic nihilism seems to reign supreme.

So I'm pleased. I'm also looking forward to doing more with vocational rehab.

I meant 'heart', lol (nm)

I personally think it's great that they are working with you as to a future job. I didn't know they had a no benzo rule? Years and years ago my first benzo ever was prescibed by a pdoc in CT in vocational rehab as at the time had no insurance as just had moved back from Florida to CT. And you know your computers. Great news. Phillipa

CE,

Glad your liking them but what does this mean?

"therapeutic nihilism seems to reign supreme."

Thanks for sharing!

"therapeutic nihilism" is a fancy pants term for the approach some (I'd say a lot) of shrinks have to mental illness, especially severe mental illness. It basically means they'll throw you drugs, give you ECT, throw you in a hospital, etc., but they don't expect a whole lot of real progress.

I am especially excited for you about the vocational rehab. What you're talking about sounds a lot like the DARS thing in Texas that Matt has gotten hooked up with. The thing that's so great about accessing these vocational rehab services is that not only will they facilitate you (and Matt) getting trained in job skills that don't put undue pressure on weaknesses, but they are hooked up with employers who are willing to take on people with disabilities and they are rewarded with tax benefits - which encourages them to stick with it. And the ultimate goal they have is to take people with disabilities and help remove the obstacles to their being able to function as independently as possible. It just doesn't get any better than that.

That's great that your locale has a decent program for people without insurance. Have you thought about applying for medicaid? That will increase your options; in case you ever do need a benzo or something else against the clinic's policy.

"No drugs of * category under any circumstances" is kind of a dumb rule though. If it was truly dangerous even under close medical supervision, the FDA would ban it. What does your clinic do with people with like, panic disorder, if SSRIs and TCAs don't work?

my guess is that panic disorder would=counseling and seroquel. I might be wrong though.
