I just want to know what is wrong.

Posted by Alas on November 17, 2011, at 19:06:11

So...I have been on psychiatric meds for a couple of years now after trying the homeopathic route, have been admitted to hospital and spent three weeks in a psychiatric clinic (so have had various psychiatrists) yet I don't know what I am being medicated for.
I am currently on Lamictin (don't know wether it's for Bi polar or epilepsy or who knows what)and Seroquel
Last night I spents hours crying in terror after both audio and visual hallusinations- interspersed between heavy wing beating type noises in my head which I have been experiencing over the past few days.
Tonight/this morning the hallucinations are a lot milder but paranoia has taken their place. I am currently lying frozen in bed, it is now 2:45AM and I have just painted my nails as nail polish was all I could reach without getting out of bed- I cannot sleep as I am afraid to close my eyes (I came to bed at about 10PM). My shoulders are hunched in order to protect my neck from what ever I feel is behind me. I feel like I am in danger from something for writing this but am dealing with it as I have calmed down a little. Aside, I am also battling with words lately, like the words I want have no meaning and I can barely spell.
I have recently been taken off my antidepressants(CymGen) and had my dosages of Lamictin changed from 100mg twice a day to 250mg in the morning and my 50mg of seroquel has been increased to 300mg. Could this simply be side effects and/or withdrawl?

In the past I have been troubled by delusions (believing my parents had been swapped and were trying to kill me for a week. I would not let them anywhere near me, which was difficult as I lived with them and relied on them for transport!),the rare hallucination, OCD and anxiety sometimes leading to convulsions and severe twitching etc. I have always had very vivid dreams, mostly nighmares and suffered from night parralasys when I was younger.

I was looking at photos on my phone earlier and had to stop because I was scared I would see someone or something else in them.

The more I tell myself that my what I am afraid of right now is not real, the worse my fear gets.

Aside from what is going on tonight I just want to know what is wrong or what I am actualy being treated for. Why can NO BODY tell me this...?!

Sounds to me like a mood disorder with psychotic features. I have something similar.

Hey,
I'm sorry you're going through such a difficult time.
I wish you didn't have to feel so afraid. :-(
It sounds like the change in meds is meant to target this?? You seeing your doc frequently to update them?
I hope your doctor can talk to you about what you're being treated for. I hope this passes soon.

Atlas first welcome to babble you will find all sorts of stories and experiences. Remember though no one here to my knowledge is a doctor so these are only personal stories and non professional advise. As for your age and the delusions, hallucinations I see you are over the age of consent but wondered if parents involved with you and seeing you doc as might be a good idea for them to also visit the doc with you. What do you feel? Phillipa

Hey again. Listen, this is a rough thing you're going through. I've had some intense episodes because of my condition, too. Try to ride it out as best you can; with treatment and a good support network, it really will get better.

You're at a good age to get treatment to help you eventually put this behind you. I'm not saying it won't pop up now and then, but if you're anything like me, you'll find future episodes more bearable and less frightening, especially if you can get proper medical treatment promptly and then continue to work with someone to help you stay in touch with reality.

I'm glad you joined babble. We're here for you.

I think you are schitzophrenic. I've had a lot of problems like yours. They diagnosed me as schizophrenic, psychotic, depressed, catatonic, I think bipolar. And now 15 years later I have a diagnosis of schitzoaffective. Which supposedly takes 8 years to diagnose.

You've been prescribed Lamictal to stabilize your mood, which implies that you are being treated for a mood disorder. Seroquel is being prescribed as an adjunct mood stabilizer, anti-manic and anti-psychotic. The two, Lamictal and Seroquel, prescribed together would indicate you are being treated for bipolar disorder, however you are suffering a good deal of psychosis despite the Seroquel. These apparitions and paranoid feelings you describe are not side effects or withdrawal from your medication.

My suspicion is that you may be Schizoaffective, as you have described problems with delusions and hallucinations that seem to run a course separate from mood problems.

You are on the right medications for either disorder, however you may need a different antipsychotic. Haldol might be a good choice for you for this acute phase.

Hey
Thanks guys
Apparently when I was only two the doctor mentioned something about shizophrenia.
I've got an appointment with the psychiatrist I get on wednesday. I am oddly feeling a lot more relaxed today, after my boyfriend broke uo with me last night, guess the anxiety of not knowing was added to everything a little.

I agree with Eric (Phidippus). I hope the Seroquel helps. If not, there are quite a few alternative medications to employ.

Is there any history of depression or mania? You haven't mentioned either condition. It would be difficult to distinguish between schizoaffective disorder and schizophrenia without knowing this. How about family history?

I'm sorry to hear about your breakup.

Yeah, history of both, particularly depression in the past few years, quite catatonic, often with mania before hand. There is history of suicide, alcoholism and depression on both sides of my family.

Gosh. You probably have yourself a nice case of Schizoaffective Disorder. Be strong. You are treatable. It sometimes takes a few weeks for the schizoid features to diminish.
