it's been ages.......nuvigil

Posted by Phil on July 1, 2011, at 18:07:12

i haven't been on this board in a long time. i was on this site almost from the beginning.
i took provigil years ago and thought it was an incredibly expensive placebo.
been having sleep problems like 3 2 hour naps a day after sleeping 8 hours the night before.
i will probably get tested for sleep apnea since i've gained 40 pounds on seroquel(sexy)
so, my doc gives me the sample deal of nuvigil. took 150mg at 11a.m. made my 3pm therapy gig and am still awake to make a 7pm dbsa meeting.
what's my biggest victory? i made my bed. yep, i'm amazing.
let's hope this continues. good to see y'all.

so, i was about to go to my meeting and noticed a not uncommon issue surfacing, tachycardia. i've had it twice in the past and could feel the shallow breathing, very weak pulse, weakness in general and jittery. i took 2 trips to er with it before.
i took 1.5mg clonazepam and got to the meeting better. after about 10 minutes into the meeting i was fine.
after 70+ meds the past 30 years and reading everything i can about bipolar disorder, i'm convinced that i really don't know a thing about it. my pdoc is good, real good. but even the best and brightest just have to act and react. it just comes with the territory. just my humble, unknowing opinion.

hey,
seroquel is awful with the weight gain and the sedation
I think it can cause tachycardia?? but what the hell do I know.

curious...how much do you take? I don't take much, but I've got weight gain anyway.
take care,
sleepy

300 mg. cause, as they say, that's where the ad effects come in.
right, you don't have time to be depressed..shopping for clothes that fit and eating garbage at every fast food joint in town keeps you too occupied.
I ate almost a half gallon of dutch chocolate ice cream a couple of days ago. haha!
i mean you gotta laugh sometimes.

Phil,

I want to thank you for mentioning dbsa. I googled this after you mentioned it. I had never heard of them, but there might be a group in my town. I sent an email and am waiting back.

I am tired of being the only mental health patient I know on an on-going
basis. (My med friends live on another coast.) I am very tired of walking my friends (the few I retain) and family members through *meds* and ups and downs. I am just going to keep looking for a support group. I am dealing with an anxiety disorder plus depression, not bipolar. My chances of positive treatment are very good. But I am a wreck from being hounded to go off medication. If another doctor or anyone says it is only anxiety, just breath, I am going to smack them. This is where a support group will come in handy. They will help me stick to my beliefs in non-violence.

And yes, absolutely. Making the bed is amazing :D.

I'm glad you are still around.

I've only been to 2 meetings but they are extremely good..don't know how else to put it. no 12 step stuff. no pity parties. just breaking up into small groups and talking about stuff...safely.
i knew after the first meeting i'd be going back. they are 2 hour meetings so you have plenty of time to talk and listen.
i hope you find one. therapy is just not enough for me.

I don't know if your docs don't want you on meds or if it's other people. when people(rarely) say I'd be better off without meds I ask them if they have a license to practice medicine. No? good, then stfu.

It's a long story, and sadly eternally googlible. I see a new doctor on Tuesday. I am hoping it's a good match. Today I was at the urgent care (walk in docs) for a patch through of benzos.

There is a world of misunderstanding out there and people (myself included until very recently) struggle with the idea of medication. There is no essential self for me to reveal. I am jettisoning idealism. All b*llsh*t and cynicism about pharma aside, I am going to look at medication as an imperfect act of kindness. Unless
someone needs it, they really don't know. So absolutely stfu, but I try to be polite, (part of a larger personal
problem for which there is on-going criticism regarding my personal habits).

I am managing to build up good boundaries about the med thing and know what's best for me. Thank the stars or whomsoever I have now an (totally freeked but not ill) husband who finally understands and a very smart pro-med friend. How people get through the world w/o advocacy....I don't know.

I guess we're all just doing the best we can. I still wonder what my life would have been like if there were absolutely no treatments at all available to me. would i have lived? could i have tried harder? i think the answers are clear but i still wonder.
i told my doc a few days ago(i'm on 6 meds btw)I said you know what pisses me off? people w/ bipolar that had a manic episode when they were, say 20, lithium fixed it, been on it ever since, no side effects and their life is great. well, no one's life is great but treatment wise, piece of cake. kay redfield jamison is like that but she suffered and almost died because she didn't want to take her meds. she's a brilliant doctor, author, knows the territory like few others in the world...nope, like that mania.
i know i'm rambling..ambian time.

Phil,

I found two meetings in my area. (That's two meetings total per month.) One is about a mile from my house in Podunk.

Who knows? All I know is that I have searched and searched. And there in a little church down the street from me...

And no one will look twice at me if I take meds :-)

It's not for about 3- weeks.

Thanks again.

Podunk? <Spock eyebrow> I really do raise a Spock eyebrow, involuntarily....

Podunk is an Algonkian (Indian) term for a marsh, or alternatively, the middle of nowhere. Is that where you live?

Sometimes even somewhere is nowhere enough. Literally, no marsh and not that rural.

I love words. I never ever knew that about Podunk. Is it offensive? I meant none. Where are Algokians?
