Transient psychosis in BPD?

Posted by Deneb on November 3, 2010, at 18:28:42

I'm starting to think that I experience some of the transient psychosis that some people with borderline personality disorder experience.

I mean, sometimes my thoughts just don't make any freaking sense!

So, what is this transient psychosis exactly? Is it like real psychosis or is it something entirely different?

Is it some kind of brain malfunction or is a learned behaviour?

Some examples of this possible transient psychosis in me:

One time in a drug store, a man approached me and started asking personal questions. I didn't like him and walked away after talking to him for a bit. Later I see him sitting on a bench in the mall looking at his cell phone. Suddenly out of nowhere, I got it in my mind that he had been taking pictures of me under my shorts and I became enraged. I went to the guy and actually accused him of being a pervert! I had absolutely no evidence that this guy took pervy pictures.

In high school once I became convinced that all the teachers were plotting against me. I became very fearful and would physically hide whenever I saw a teacher walking down the hallway.

One time a long time ago, I felt like I was high or something. I was on top of the world and thought that anything was possible and that everything that happened in the world was for my enjoyment. I was thinking of building really wild and crazy business plans and becoming rich and famous.

Sometimes I think there are monsters in the basement.

Anyways, I hope I don't have schizophrenia or something. :/

Your first few examples sound like paranoia.

Transient means that the psychosis comes and goes.

I am 99.9% sure that you do not have schizophrenia.

Still talk to your pdoc about it if you need some reasurrance.

No, Deneb moods swings are more in keeping with BPD. Sorry to talk about you like you are not here Deneb. No disrespect intended.

I don't feel ... I know. Emotional regulation is very difficult for people with BPD. I was told that I have BPD "traits" because I self injure and I have an eating disorder. That is why I did a 9 month DBT programme and I learnt so much about BPD. Also, it has been a really long time since I have self injured because I use the skills I learned in DBT.

Long time ago I read the a person until they were in late teens couldn't be dx'd with BPD. Wonder if that's still true they used to say that it was common in teens to do these things? Phillipa

What you read is still true. You cannot be dx'd with BPD until your personality has finished forming.

Do you have any idea how many indicators of BPD there are? Here is the top 20!

Mood changes
Anger
Depression
Anxiety
Difficulty with relationships
Unstable relationships
Idealization
Devaluation
Inappropriate immediate attachment
Sensitivity to rejection
Fear of abandonment
Aggressive behavior
Suicide threats
Self-image problems
Unstable self image
Behavioral problems
Self-destructive behavior
Impulsivity
Excessive spending
Binge eating
Unprotected sex

The list goes on and on.

Pdoc said I definitely don't have schizophrenia, but I'm kind of a hypochondriac so sometimes I think I have all these illnesses.

I just worry about the schizophrenia thing because the very first pdoc I ever saw wrote to my then GP that I might be in a prodrome of schizophrenia. So now I'm scared I'm in a prodrome, but pdoc said I wasn't. Still, my fears get irrational.

If you were schizophrenic, you wouldn't even know it. The hallucinations would seem real to you and you would not probably be aware that anything was wrong. That's why schizophrenics often stop taking their meds. So do people in intense bipolar manias with delusions. I knew a guy who was convinced that people were trying to poison him with meds.
