saphris is disgusting!

Posted by inanimate peanut on July 2, 2010, at 1:01:57

I can't take saqhris. I just tried-- i honestly really did try. It dissolves under your tongue instead of you swallowing it. You then can't eat or drink for 10 min. I made it 2 min before I had to spit it out and rinse my mouth with water and then with orange juice. Now the tip of my tongue is numb. It must just be me because surely not everyone can think it is that disgusting and take it anyway! I was going to try it before the nortrip, but forget that. Assuming it arrives, I will start the nortrip in one week.

So, you're saying you can't take it because of the taste? Can't you just swollow it whole, or put it inside another gellcap and swallow it?

no, it's sub-lingual, so you have to take it under the tongue. I tried several times last night (probably did ingest 5mg with my 4 combined attempts). Yeah, I've swallowed some nasty pills in my time, and I'm willing to suck it up and do that. This one you have to leave in your mouth for 10 minutes, and I just can't make it.

Are you sure that sublingual *needs* to be disolved under the tounge? (I really don't know) I was just under the impression that sublingual just equated to faster absorbtion.

For instance, sublingual lorazepam is used for faster relief of a panic attack, but I think you can still swallow it and get the effect (just later).

I really don't know, though.

I think it depends on the med as sublingual nitroglycerine is definitely under the tongue and a homeopatic med arnica montana must be dissolved under the tongue. Phillipa

But, the drug still contains that amount of drug. Olanzapine zydis 5mg for instance still contains 5mg of olanzapine. I just swallowed them, still wonked me out like regular zyprexa.

it has a big DO NOT SWALLOW on it, so it must not work if you swallow it. I wish you could swallow it because according to Scott it's like a cross of Remeron with Buspar and so it would be a really good drug for me to try! I'm going to read the insert carefully and then maybe, since I can't return the samples anyway not that they're open, see if I can't take it on an empty stomach.

What did you find out? Can you swallow the med? Phillipa

Nope, it says specifically in the instructions that you can't chew or swallow it. However, I did find a way to get it down. If i put a jolly rancher on the top of my tongue to block the flavor I can tolerate it. I take the jolly rancher out as soon as the tablet has dissolved. I'm sure that the sugar from the jolly rancher interferes with absorption a little, but I can't imagine that it would be too horribly much and I figure it's better than not taking it at all. Oh the things we do for meds!

The package inserts often says a lot of things you can't do which you can.

The emsam package tells you you can't cut the patches in half, which you can.

The concerta package tells you you can't spit the tablets which you can.

You can chew dexedrine or biphentin if you want.

You don't need to take medications with food, or at a particular time of day for that matter.

With many meds, you don't really *need* to avoid alcohol.

Some meds work fine "as needed", even though they're supposed to be taken regularly.

Expired medications often work just fine too.

Anyhow, often the inserts are not set in stone.

That's a valid point, which is why I hope the "no food or drink" will allow my jolly rancher as an exception :-). btw, if it "dissolves within seconds in saliva" as the insert explains and you swallow your saliva, don't you swallow alot of the drug anyway?
