Anxiety + Depression must be separate conditions

Posted by Phillipa on December 30, 2009, at 10:58:25

After reading the current threads it just seems like depression and anxiety are different conditions. Is true depression just wanting to sleep and not caring? And anxiety fear of unknown and doing things. And fears of anything? Phillipa

They always come together with me. They feed off each other. Anxiety tires me, makes me feel hopeless and that depresses me. Then the depression makes me let things go, which makes my problems pile up and in turn gives me more anxiety.

What has always amazed me are depressed workaholics. When I'm depressed, I don't want to work.

Agree totally control the anxiety and no depression. Same thing happens with me. Phillipa

Due to my own experience I believe all depression stems from anxiety. When the cause of the anxiety continues or isn't resolved then we become depressed. Just look at the rat models whereby they give up after repeated shock treatment and display hopelessness.

Anxiety and Depression is partly a chicken and egg kind of thing. But, I find that I must stop the anxiety first with Lorazepam before I have even a chance of controlling the depression with Effexor.

I've been perfectly happy and riddled with anxiety. Depression and anxiety are different creatures.

I don't think it is an either-or relationship.

For me, anxiety is a symptom of my affective disorder. It resolves completely when the depression is treated successfully.

And I'm the opposite as if I let anxiety get out of hand almost get depressed. Have to dig myself up, get out, do something, and moderate excercise. Typing is a good release also keeps the mind occupied so can't dwell in my case. Hence the ebay is good for me. Phillipa

How would you know that only the depression was being treated, considering that the treatments are mostly the same? They certainly go hand in hand, but if they are different, I think I qualify for both chronic major depression and GAD. I think that once you have been suffering untreated anxiety or depression for long enough, the disorders start piling on. If you start out with anxiety, pretty soon it will become depression, and then it will become psychotic or it may develop into bipolar. Likewise if you start out with depression.

My anxiety absolutely feeds off of my depression, because one of the things that I am most anxious about is getting overwhelmed or lacking the energy to deal with things.

First of all, I don't meet the DSM criteria for GAD. That might not be very pursuasive though, since the DSM description for GAD seems very primative.

My anxiety is situational rather than general. It is not present continually in the backround. In addition, I was a bipolar ultra rapid-cycler for a few years. The only time that anxiety was present was during the depressive phase. It miraculously disappeared, as did the depression, within an hour of the onset of the mood swing into euthymia.

A person can have two Axis I disorders at the same time. Depression and GAD can occur comorbidly.

I wondered about the anxiety/depression linkage for years...

When I finally discovered object relations theory, it made so much more sense to me. Heres an example:

http://www.mentalhelp.net/poc/view_doc.php/type/doc/id/419

(Although this particular article pertains to 'narcissism' its a semi-synthesis of object relations theory and means alot more than what it appears to be on the surface as shown on the 1st page.)

IMO, the DSM was subsumed to fit economics (eg., insurance billing/codes) rather than duduced from affective disorders of the brain.

Not an easy read, but interesting. :o))

Hi.

Can you summarize what that is?

Thanks.

Google Melanie Klein. My understanding as told to me by a pdoc once was that if a Mother leaves a room the young child thinks she's permanently gone. So the child cries. So much involved. Phillipa
