I wondered about the anxiety/depression linkage for years...
When I finally discovered object relations theory, it made so much more sense to me. Heres an example:

(Although this particular article pertains to 'narcissism' its a semi-synthesis of object relations theory and means alot more than what it appears to be on the surface as shown on the 1st page.)
IMO, the DSM was subsumed to fit economics (eg., insurance billing/codes) rather than duduced from affective disorders of the brain.
Not an easy read, but interesting. :o))
