busprione and breathing difficulties

Posted by Garnet71 on April 3, 2009, at 22:32:18

All the journal articles i read stated Buspirone regulates/improves breathing irregularities as a 5-HT1A agonist.

Can it have the opposite effect? I feel like my breathing is all messed up and that is initiating anxiety attacks. I feel like I have asthma all of the sudden and this choking feeling and tightness in chest. i haven't taken the Adderall in 2 days, but starting getting panic/anxiety attacks again before that, so I'm thinking it might be the busprione.

Garnet you could be right as nervousness and agitation are listed as two of the side effects. Somehow it does something also with dopamine to me that's wellbutrin which increases my anxiety. Google it. Love Phillipa

it had been working for anxiety before though, right?

the original use for amphetamine was broncodialation. you might be having a rebound effect from going off of the adderall.

if it was helping you, you should mention this (and hope your nurse/doctor realizes d-amp would be better)

and just b/c the cool kids myco et. got sick, doesn't mean you should try to too =p

When I'm anxious I have a hard time breathing. Sometimes I even discover that I'm holding my breath and it's a struggle.

Also, I don't know where you live, but pollen is ubiquitous and omnipresent here (and of course I have to be out in it all day). Maybe it is contributing to your breathing.

Has anything else changed in your environment?

Seldom.

Wellbutrin definitely made me anxious tho it didn't give me any breathing problems. But being more anxious could certainly cause feelings of tightness in your chest and breathlessness. If it continues I would check in with your PCP just for your own peace of mind and to make sure there is nothing else going on.

I think it IS the rebound of Adderall. Checked out some ADD forums today. With the exception of driving in my car-it doesn't happen though until after it wears off, and others report the same. I didn't take it for 2 days (or was it 3? all the days run together), and the chest tightness/breathing issues went away.

Felt good when I got up today..then later I ate a bunch of garlic (yum?) because its good for blood pressure-well I put it in the hummus I made with the b-l-e-n-d-e-r (hi 10derheart) then I walked 3 miles-fastwalking-walk. I'm going to take just 1 does now so I can get some work done. I got up at 6 am and still unproductive w/o it-there are all these missing gaps in time. I hardly did anything today and its already almost 9. I tried to work, put the paper down, get distracted, pick it back up for 2 mintues, put it back down, run downstairs for laundry, get back to computer and grab highlighter marker to edit, stop, check email, check forum, pick paper back up...run to store...get mail...grr

So if it happens again, I'll probably have to quit taking it...another script to add to the piles of pills I throw away. :(

Oh-and my PDocRN told me you are supposed to throw them away by dissolving them in water w/coffee grounds then throw them in the yard. I never knew that. I mean, does it make our drinking water and environment safer by having them leech in the backyard instead of a big garbage dump???

Still, I don't know if buspirone will be sufficient for anxiety. Anxiety symptoms had suddenly stopped a week before i starting taking this drug, and I guess the test will be when I'm under multiple pressures again/stress. I think the asthma like symptoms triggered the anxiety attacks as opposed to a psychological manifestation..so the Adderall will have to go if this continues.

I almost went out and bought St Johns Wort today but changed my mind. Still haven't yet decided what to do--besides daily exercise.

Yes-I saw that too Phillipa- breathing/bronchial/blood pressure/heart stuff were "infrequent" (though not rare) side effects of Buspirone; nothing i had was listed as "frequent".

forgot to say - magnesium and asthma symptoms

I caught a glimpse of an article that said magnesium citrate can aggravate asthma like symtpoms. Don't know if this is valid; will check later.

I had taken m.c. the past 2 nights prior to the episode. I don't take anything regularly anymore, but decided to take m.c. when I started getting anxiety symptoms again. I can't seem to win with supplements.

No, and of course taking up cigs again recently had *nothing* to do with any of this (hi Seldomseen). lol No, seriously, this all came about suddenly w/the adderall...I'm going to quit again as soon as this semester is over, so please don't scold me. :)) I promise. :-))

It would fly in the face of what I understand about the effects of supplemental magnesium. Magnesium supps are recommended to reduce asthma symptoms, as they aid in preventing bronchospasm and reduce the general tone of the airway muscles. IV mag sulphate is sometimes used to treat acute asthma attacks in the emergency room.
I've never heard anything bad about the citrate salt.

Oh thanks Lar-maybe it was on one of those ADD forums....I couldn't remember..hence the disclaimer.

I did almost OD on epsom salt bath before though..causes shaking and rapid heart beat. I think I poured too much salt in the water.

same problem with MODAFINIL (question)

Modafinil gives me shortness of breath and also tightness around stomach and chest. This has been very annoying and I'm having panic attacks again. I have been taking it for a year but now I have been off it for almost three weeks, but the side effect persists. Does anyone know how long after quitting a med a side effect can last?

Garnet, buspirone has *only* negative effects, so although it's not clear whether your symptoms are a result of the drug, there's still no reason to take it. I think you'd be a lot happier if you saved your money and bought some extra Xanax. Or try phenibut. It works well as a muscle relaxant and is also mood-elevating.
