Is anyone on Parnate

Posted by delna on March 5, 2009, at 9:09:23

Hello,
I have just been started on Parnate for severe exhausted depression associate with bipolar 1. I have tried everything with no success.
Parnate is supposed to be activating but I am not feeling activated rather I'm drowsy. I am on a very low dose slowly titrating upwards and though my depression has lifted my sleepiness is still bad (maybe worse, cant tell).
I read somewhere that some unlucky people get sleepy on Parnate instead of energetic. But I also read that Parnate doesnt become stimulating until a rather high dose is reached.
Does anyone have any experience? What dose are most people on?
Thank you so much for any help
D

I was on it recently. low dose made me very drowsy, 30mg became activating for me in a major way. I tend to need lower doses than the majority so you may need something higher than 30mg before it becomes energising.

Hi,

I'm not on parnate but nardil...there are many parnate users here who will offer advice in time.

I do know that, based on experiences of those here, you need higher doses to be effective (40-80mg). The side effects you are getting now will diminish at higher doses (true for nardil also). You will be 'unlucky' if you find it helps you sleep lol...this is one med that is almost a sure thing for insomnia for most people. Just give it time and get up to a higher dose at a comfortable rate.

Thanks so much for your response!! You have made me feel so hopeful.
Right now I am on 10mg and am so disappointed that it is making me even more sleepy when my doctor had painted such a promising picture of it.
Now, thanks to your post I feel that he will probably be able to get a response from me by increasing the dose.
Any idea if there is some published data on this dose related effect? Most sites and papers just concentrate on the diet problems and very little on anything else. This is the last drug left for me (as I have tried everything) and the rule tends to be 'if it can sedate, it will'Sometimes I need to show my pdoc 'evidence' that a certain reaction is possible because he gets so flabagasted by some of my drug reactions!

Thanks again
Best, D

Unfortunatly i don't know of any data to back it up. Most people are suprised when i say parnate makes me sleepy. When i went into hospital they lowered my dose from 30 to 10mg and it would knock me out to sleep which even suprised the doctors.
