Zyprexa and Abilify augmentation

Posted by Bob on June 5, 2008, at 16:11:01

Is there any evidence, or rationality to believe that concurrent Onlanzapine + Apiprazole augmentation would be of benefit? Maybe an SNRI for the AD affect with Zyprexa for the anxioytic and synergistic properties, with low dose Abilify for the energy, activation and synergy. Theoretically, I'm talking very small doses of each AAP, like 1mg or less.

Make any sense?

Hi Bob,
I take 10mg of abilify every night. When I'm in crisis, I have 10mg of zyprexa zydis (it's an instant dissolvable tablet), which does the trick. I think it's nice to have a prn option, since I probably wouldn't want to take 2 next-generation APs at once.

I also take
lamictal 150mg
zoloft 100mg
wellbutrin 150mgSR

hope this helps, or gives you an idea

-Ll

Personal opinion, I find armchair quarterbacking of psych drugs interesting but rather fruitless in what actually ends up working. Is there any rationale or evidence for a particular combination? Doesn't matter.

As one example, in one case report pramipexole (a dopamine agonist) was added to zyprexa (dopamine antagonist) with added benefits to the patient that did not defeat what zyprexa was doing. Both drugs helped, and should have apparently cancelled each other out, but did not.

I'm more worried about whether it would be contraindicated for some particular reason. I guess I realize that trying to guess whether such a combo would actually be therapeutic for me would be folly.

I seem to recall reading a couple case reports about Abilify being added to ongoing Zyprexa treatment for treatment resistant cases and (I think) tardive dyskinesia...it worked for both indications, so I guess if you have really severe psychotic problems it might be a good way to go. Otherwise, I dunno; it seems like a lot of $$$ and potential side effects if you don't have some kind of intense problem.

I took this combo. Didn't work well for me!!! In the beginning it worked ok. But eventualy the abilify out did the zyprexa. Then I crashed. Couldn't sleep, couldn't eat enough to keep blood sugar high enough. Lost my job. Went psychotic for a good long while after quiting the abilify.

I dont' recomend this combo. And if you do, maybe keep the abilify no higher that 5mg.
