Posted by SteelyDan on April 22, 2008, at 12:43:08

My pdoc said i could go up to 40mgs., in combination w/Prozac 40mgs. This is only my 2nd day, my question is, should i stay at 20mgs., or go to 40mgs. for more effect? I'm taking it for tr depression. Thanks. Also, can anyone tell me how Geodon works?

Hi Dan,
I took 60 mg for a while. It helped with my PTSD symptoms, like flashbacks. I also struggle with depression, but at the time I was taking high doses of cymbalta.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziprasidone

maybe that will answer some of the more technical questions?

Everyone will respond differently to meds, but in general if you respond to a small dose--- good for you!

I'm sorry you're feeling bad, but at least you've got a new treatment to try (just don't resist it!!! )

Hi Dan,

For me 20mg was enough to overnight lift my depression and anxiety - for about two weeks. Then it quit working as well so I went to 40mg. That got it working again - for another two weeks. So then I went to 60. AGain the improvement came back. This went on for five months till I got to 120 mg. Which was too much. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin. And it wasn't working very well at that dosage even. So I slowly tapered off it. And tried Zyprexa instead. But I couldn't tolerate the Zyprexa so I went back on Geodon but at a alower dose. I now take 20mg when I get up in the morning, 20mg around midday and 40mg at night. It doesn't work like it used to but when I have accidentally skipped a dose, I have gotten quite depressed within 6-7 hours. So I stay on it. Maybe now that I am on Nardil and not depressed any more, I can taper off the Geodon. I am going to wait till I am completely stable on nardil first though and I am also in the process of weaning off Klonopin and switching to Valium so don't want to make too many changes at once. So I will probably wait about tryiing to get off the Geodon.

My understanding of how Geodon works is this:

There are three kinds of dopamine receptors in the brain. Geodon blocks dopamine from getting to two of those receptors (I can't remember which two). This leaves more dopamine available to go to the third dopamine receptor. That's a basic simplistic anwer. Probably SLS or someone could go into great detail about how it works but my answer is how it works in a nutshell.

Hope this helps a bit.

Marsha
