pre-medication before dental care

Posted by llurpsienoodle on April 8, 2008, at 10:11:44

I've just made an appt. with a new dentist and the receptionist asked me if I needed any "pre medication before dental care"

I'm assuming she meant a xanax or valium or something.

I have xanax and klonopin at home. Should I take one (the dentist freaks me out!) super-phobic. I guess the answer is yes...

any of you have experience with pre-medication?

The recep. may be referring to the heebie jeebies that "most" folks have before a dental visit or she could have also been asking due to some folks needing premedication due to certain heart issues (MVP and such...) that require antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental stuff...

For Your Info....

"...Make sure your dentist or dental hygienist knows that you have mitral valve prolapse if you need to undergo dental work likely to cause gum bleeding, including routine cleaning. Also, tell your surgeon about your MVP before operations such as tonsillectomies, gallbladder surgery or prostate surgery. You may need to take a course of antibiotics before the treatment or surgery in order to reduce the risks of an infection. The prophylactic use of antibiotics destroys most of the bacteria that enter and travel through your bloodstream, thus preventing an infection of the heart valve. Amoxicillin is one of the most commonly prescribed medications for this use, but if you're allergic to the penicillin family of drugs, your doctor can choose other antibiotics instead, such as clindamycin, clarithromycin or azithromycin....."

Glydin's suggestion that the receptionist may have been referring to prophylactic antibiotics is probably correct.

The other possibility is anaesthetics, but usually the dentist will ask about that just before starting any procedure that may be painful.

Note that Valium or other sedatives may not be suitable if you're going to drive, unless perhaps if you take it regularly and are tolerant to the sedative effects.

I wouldn't take one without calling back and making sure it's ok. If they think they may have to use local anesthetics or anything like that, you want to check possible interactions very closely. Personally, the dentist doesn't bother me (other than that I have a strong gag reflex and choke when they spray water in my mouth), but if you think it will (and I know it is very difficult for some people) then call back and ask if it's ok. I'm sure they've had plenty of people ask before.

All good points. Here if it is anxiety they are advertising on radio of the dentists that use some type of calming agent for people are frightened have no idea of what. I agree call back and ask. Love Phillipa
