Glydin's suggestion that the receptionist may have been referring to prophylactic antibiotics is probably correct.

The other possibility is anaesthetics, but usually the dentist will ask about that just before starting any procedure that may be painful.

Note that Valium or other sedatives may not be suitable if you're going to drive, unless perhaps if you take it regularly and are tolerant to the sedative effects.
