Effexor + desipramine or Cymbalta + desipramine ?

Posted by TriedEveryDrug on December 31, 2007, at 10:59:53

Hi,

I was diagnosed with adult ADD (inattentive-type) 10 years ago.

Desipramine really works for me. Except it makes me anxious, depressed and very angry.

My doc said I could combine effexor and desipramine, but the Epocrates drug checker warns of serious cardiac problems doing this.

I notice that Epocrates' warning for cymbalta and desipramine is less severe, but cymbalta inhibits desipramine metabolism so caution is advised too.

I was wondering if anyone has been on either of these combos?

Thanks. :)

So if you weren't taking Desipramine, you wouldn't be depressed? You just suffer from ADD? Seems harsh to have to treat the side effects of the desipramine. Have you ever tried Strattera for your ADD? I wonder if that would make you depressed.

I think the meds are contraindicated because of serotonin syndrome.

Hi Maxime,

My doc originally gave me first Effexor then Cymbalta to treat the ADD after not responding to stimulants and not being able to stand the desipramine.

That didn't work, so he proposed Effexor + desipramine. He said he has prescribed the combo before. I don't notice any side effects at all with the effexor, so I don't think it is that harsh.

For me, desipramine is harsh!

Yeah, I tried Strattera. Seemed promising but it kept waking me up after a couple hours of sleep at night. Got so sleep deprived that I could not stay on it.

In fact, I've tried every single ADD drug. Now I'm going through the combos. Desipramine has been the only thing that works - and it works AMAZINGLY well for my ADD symptoms. The side-effects are just too much though. I can stay on it a few weeks at a time.

Oh - since I'm so non-responsive, my doc had me get an MRI and found that my left hippocampus is smaller than my right. He thinks that might have something to do with things, but he honestly admits he isn't sure, and he isn't sure what to do about it.

Thanks.
