How to squash GAD and social anxiety.

Posted by Jimmyboy on November 11, 2007, at 19:02:43

My symptoms are 1. fatigue , brain fog, no motivation, etc. and 2. lots of general anxiety, social anxiety and some anxiety attacks.

recently I have started a regimen to reduce inflammation in my body and very happily have noticed the brain fog and fatigue have all but vanished, but the anxiety is very much still prevalent. I have tried some benzo's , like Klonopin or Xanax, but at the dose that works, it basically makes me exhausted , and "zoned out", so I am looking for another option , that does not cause sexual dysfunction.. nefazodone has been helpful for anxiety in the past, so I may try that, but I am interested in other options.

I posted quite a bit on this over the last few weeks, I hope people are not tired of hearing about it, but it has been tremendously helpful for me, so I just wanted to share.

I started taking Evening primrose oil 3-4 caps in the morning and 3-4 in the day sometimes..also supporting vitamins like zinc, vit C and vit E ( gamma-tocopherol variety). The Primrose has GLA in it and that is converted to PGE 1. A substance that reduces inflammation. Anyway, in short my goal is to reduce PGE 2 ( pro-inflammatory) and evevate PGE 1 thus reducing inflammation.

If you look on the alternative board I believe there is a more in depth discussion if you are interested, its subject line is about evening primrose oil. There was also some good links on this board titled " inflammation theory of depression"

I don't believe Serzone has any antihistamine properties.

The only things that have helped my gad/social phobia have been nardil and parnate... i've been on every other AD available in Australia with no luck. However those two MAOI's work like a miricale for about 3-4 weeks and then the side effects kick in and they make me feel as crappy as being on an SSRI. So i'm now on a mission to find out why it works so well in the period it's not meant to and then after the time when it should be kicking in it becomes non effective for me.

Remeron does has A-H properties, if I recall correctly, as does Deseryl.

Nefazodone already working!

Well, ,I started Nefazodone a couple of days ago and already the anxiety is subsiding. I have been in 2 situations that used almost inevitable cause lots of anxiety or even full blown anxiety attacks - since starting Nefazodone it was SO much better! Tried all benzo's and they didn't really help at all, but this certainly does. From past experiences and what others say, Nefazodone is not great for depression for most, but I think its 5ht2A antagonism property can be of real help with panic and anxiety for some people.

Jimmyboy, my situation relates very well to your situation concerning anxiety. Except for the problems you report with benzo's. They've been my main defense for 15 years, but naturally docs are trying to coax me to replace them with a more suitable longterm option, and finally I've agreed.

I've given the SSRI/NRI's I believe a decent chance, the most success achieved with Effexor, but I remained convinced there has to be something better. Can anyone explain why these meds, considered AD's, are approved for anxiety? Currently I'm giving Celexa a try but my mind/body is giving me the stop sign already. I understand you have to give them time to work, but with the feelings you have, all instincts tell me they are not the solution.

I recently tried Remeron, first pill I've ever taken which actually put me to sleep involuntarily, an achievement in itself, but again I felt it wasn't going to be a steady, solid solution. Far too sedating.

Your Serzone recommendation has me intrigued. In looking for a replacement to benzos, I've researched: Buspar, TCA's like imipramine, Nardil, Inderal, even antipsychotics. Seems like a never ending search...
