Stablon for post-stroke depression

Posted by Ista on September 8, 2007, at 23:25:42

Hi all,

I just browse around internet cos my mom just recently been prescribed with Stablon, due to her 'depression' that persists after her mild stroke last Jan.

Just wondering, whether anybody out there have any experience or knowledge on depression caused by stroke - incl how to make it better?
My mom presdisposition is already a bit melancholic and pessimistic. Initially I thought the stroke just make her worst. I did not (or mayb subconciously did not) think it was a clinical depression. I was also scared of the side effects of antidepressant, with what little I learnt in school (I did bachelor of psychology) - that time it was mainly Prozac.

I did some read up on Stablon and find it generally safe - at least it did not alter cognitive process and I just talk to her on the phone, she still sound very depressed though my dad said she's much better already.
Oh btw she's in Jakarta while I'm in Singapore.

Really really hope anybody can enlighten me, I'm so lost! I got info on how to recover her physically, but mentally? We've tried psychologist and she says it's a waste of money. Sigh.

Thanks everybody!

I used to work in rehab, and a few of the docs I worked with swore by Pamelor for post-stroke depression. I used to have a couple of research articles about this, but I can't seem to put my fingers on them, sorry.

The distance between you makes it hard to offer support, and I know from my own experience, it makes me feel more helpless, too. I hope she finds some lasting relief soon.

Good luck.

Is she able to get around? No paralysis etc. Then getting her out as much as possible. She may be very scared that the same thing could happen again. Can her doc talk to her about the feasibility of it happening again? Is she on meds don't know if it was a bleed or a blockage as this would determine the meds. Why will a phychologist not help? Yes, she is not paralysed.
While I was holidaying there, I tried to get her around, like visiting relatives etc. She also complained of giddiness. Which makes her quite reluctant to go out.
Thing is there are limited activity for not-so-healthy elderly in Jakarta.
Will think of a way, thanks for reminding me of this. Active mind is a happy mind!

Hmm psychologist dint help cos my mom thought all they did in the room was 'talking', no medication prescribed, etc... The consultation fee not very cheap either.

Thanks Philippa. Do let me know if you have other ideas.
