Anyone notice Lamictal as anti-obsessional?

Posted by cgd092 on February 11, 2007, at 17:53:05

I've been on Lamictal for a couple months now and I feel really...normal. It's meant to be a mood stabilizer, but I'm noticing a lack of certain obsessional thoughts. Now, I don't have OCD, but when anxious/depressed, I get ruminative and fixated on a number of topics. I notice that lately, a couple of particularly bothersome ones have pretty much disappeared. It's like having a craving for something suddenly disappear. It's pleasant. I couldn't find anything on the 'net to indicate Lamictal can be an anti-obsessional, but it seems to be working that way for me. Anyone else? Thanks!

For whatever reason it is working for you just go with it and don't question a good thing. Love Phillipa

I just began taking Lamictal about a month ago. I just increased to 200 mgs, and am waiting for that 6 week mark when the full effect of the medicine is to be experienced.

However, my PDOC did tell me that Lamictal would help with both my anxiety and my OCD.
Glad that it's working for you, and I sure hope it has that effect on me!

Think happy thoughts,
Shanon

I've noticed the same thing. After 5 weeks at 100mg I have just this week moved up to 150mg. And over the last few weeks I have noticed less rumination. I am on Lamictal for unipolar depression, not OCD, but like lots of depressed people I do get stuck on certain thoughts and feelings. I'm hoping that this effect of Lamictal will get even better- I still have more ruminations than I would like to have.

I should mention I'm only on 50mg/day! I got clear up to 100mg/day as instruction by my pdoc, but after 75mg on I was waking up at 3am wide awake, feeling totally rested and wide awake. I knew that wasn't right, so she had me go back to 50mg/day, and I seem to have some kind effect on just 50mg. Has anyone on higher doses noticed that middle of the night insomnia?

Not at all. I'm on 150mg now, will continue at this dose for two weeks; then I go to 200mg - if I last that long. I still obsess over non-issues, still over-react to some things people say or do, still obsess over what might be wrong with my physical health. I also obsess over whether or not I really should be on SSDI.

Maybe this will change at 200mg. But it sure hasn't diminished while I've been ramping up to 150mg.

For the few days when Lamictal initially worked for me, there was definitely less obsessionality, just like there was less anxiety and less depression. So yes, I have observed that about it.

Yes, it totally worked for me for obsessive thoughts and ruminations. I think because it really helps anxiety which may be a factor in obsessional thoughts. Whatever the reason this drug has helped with alot of things even though I take it for bipolar II , it has sorted out many other co-morbid things I had....somehow
Take care

I've had the insomnia as well, starting from pretty low doses, even 25mg. I have started using triazolam or alprazolam for sleep. I also use some triazolam or alprazolam during the day since starting Lamictal. I have some irritation whenever I move up from one dosage level to another.

It sounds like you are getting good results at a relatively low dosage.
