BBC SEROXAT investigation - any1 watch this???!!!

Posted by rovers95 on January 29, 2007, at 16:12:34

Just wondering if anyone watched the panorama investigation. I got about 10 mins in and that was enough for me!!! Having read around this both before and after, and from seeing where the program was going i was disgusted!!!

How can GSK do this??? What worries me is what else are they (and other drugs companies) hiding?! I no people who are on this drug, and others similar - what could this be doing to them!!! The punishments for this cover up should be severe as the crime is so inhumane!!!

It doesn't surprise me one single bit. I personally suspect that stuff like this has been happening for ages (well I mean look what happened with the tabacco industry for instance). There was something vaguely similar with cymbalta or something like that, as fas as I can recollect.

This sort of thing happens with an awful of stuff. Like for instance, artifical sweetners, etc etc.

You should check out "The corporation" a film documentary about companies such as GSK.

Its terrible.

Apparently there's a whole lot of unscrupulous practices regarding docs/pdocs and drug companies.

I know that the Company was totally unethical in hiding such info butI have to say that I just get annoyed that they keep targetting Seroxat.

All Anti-depressants can cause Suicidal thoughts (not just Seroxat) and I imagine the other drug companies know this but choose not to divulge it so why keep harping on about Seroxat and not mention the other drugs as well???

From what I understand, some antidepressants have a higher propensity to cause suicidial ideation than others.

If so, it is important to know which ones, as they might not be the best first choice for a very suicidal/agitated person.

The big deal is not that a particular drug has this side effect. That alone could be noted, with according changes to prescription. The discusting part is when a company knows that their drug has this potential, and knowingly hides that information.

Let the lives of the children who have taken their life due to paxil be on thier shoulders.

While perhaps not every suicide can be prevented by a strong clear warning, it should certainly reduce the risk, and increase the necessary monitoring of at risk patients.

Where there is big bucks to be made - there is usually corruption. There are folks out there that don't give a damn what meds do to people as long as they are getting their cash. There was all sorts of lies with neurotin. Sorry for my harsh tone, but this hits a nerve with me. Lying to the vulnerable is inexcusable to me.

I would tend to agree with most of the statements above... while we will never know the depth of any "sinister" coverups, all antidepressants have been CYA now with black boxes warning of possible suicidal behaviour.

But there is always the possibility of suicidal acts occurring regardless of the dose due to breakthrough depression. That doesn't make it any more or less tragic, and people also want somewhere to point to those cases.

That doctors were using it for minors falls in the responsibility of the doctors as well. Its a hard decision to say, well, I have a patient at 16 years old who is exhibiting signs of MDD, what do I do ethically?

I speak not for GSK, which makes a number of medications including BPH medications, protease inhibitors, antibiotics, AEDs such as Lamictal, and Wellbutrin/XR/etc, typical of a transnational corporation (it was a vertical merger of three well known old line drug corporations.)

We can shoot the messenger, but then what do we have left as "safe" medications. Just about all medications out there have side effects. And sometimes random occurrences that we have, have nothing to do but with the placebo syndrome that we know drug X will do this, and so we scrutinize the PDR when it may be something organic. Not to say it couldn't be the drug as well. I've had a few drugs and some side effects where its hard to say whether it is my disorder or the medication.
