I have been hypomanic on Prozac and it was so intense, the euphora was unbelivable.
Does anyone know about this?

Last year they switched me from Paxil to Prozac because of post pardum depression.. and it sent me FLYING...I skipped the hypo and went straight into FULL gear... and within 24 hours of taking it. I couldn't believe the bounce I did. I ended up in the hospital after that... and I changed doctors.

It is well known that antidepresants can and will
cause a switch to manic phase in BP.

However, I was on a mood stablizer with Paxil as the AD and I was fine- a good balance was found, then the Paxil did't seem strong enough at one point, and they switched me to Prozac- while still on the mood stabilizer, and a mania was still induced.

It is thought to be an AD that is less prone to causing cycling. I thing it is the only AD that generally can be taken without a mood stablizer.

Not in my case- my doc told me that Wellbutrin can induce manias.

Prozac is not the drug of choice to be on for AD induced hypomania. It has a long half-life. This means that it stays in your system longer when discontinued. The rule is, if you are bipolar and require an antidpressant, less is best and use a mood stabilizer for a good therapeutic response.Polarbear

Actaully to everyone i agree Prozac is the mania inducer, when manic epiodoes come.
Wellbutrin i was miserable on, irrtible, irritated, could not sleep at all during day...oh
! god, at first it was a good AD because i started feeling its kick, then later on i realized and got sick of how it made me feel. It has a dopamine, slight amphetamine feeling when it comes on, but after that its not pleasant for me.Prozac doesnt help as much as concetration wise and alertness as Wellbutrin, but i feel a warm, open look at the day, things to do. I think prozac does have a little dopamine uptake. Even though it is an SSRI i have heard it is the activating SSRI.

prozac was one of the first AD i was on, i was on it not quite a month when i had my first hospital stay, for extreme depression and while i was there i also had one of my worse manic episodes. i believe prozac to be the cause of both extremes.
after a few others i was finally put on wellbutrin and it worked quite well for me and without a mood stabilizer, however i was also on olanzipine so that may have been what helped also.
