Anyone here have Hypochondria?

Posted by Meri-Tuuli on June 8, 2006, at 5:20:57

I know I do.

Its awful. I'm constantly on edge because any tiny rash, headache etc gives me instant panic.

I'm very relucant to travel to anywhere outside Europe. Well, I just won't basically.

Its awful being like this and then having to take supplements too. Even through a qualified nutritionsit has devised a vit/min supplement regime, I'm too worried to take it all the time. I'm supposed to be taking 1g of vit C a day from this power, but as I can't reliably measure 1g out I won't take it. Its go good telling me that vit C is totally safe in large dosages... I just can't take it because I don't have the one gram scoop.

Oh well.

Kind regards

Meri

That's quite a challenge. The diversity of human experience surprises me more than anything else in the world. I'm sorry you face this every day.

I hope you get a one gram scoop soon. Better yet, a small electronic scale? Like those for weighing air mail? Do they still weigh air mail?

Hi Lar!

Hmmm, yeah its weird I can tell you! I don't know why but hey. Its kind of frustrating because I clearly know that taking these supplements won't harm me, yet still I can't take *all* that I'm supposed to in a day, which is ironic because the regime was devised to help me get better!!

I'm the same with prescription medication. Well, I avoid it at all costs.

Thanks for the reply!

BTW - I have an electronic scale, but it isn't accurate for 1g increments. Its like accurate ± 3g it seems. I guess I'll go to the local pharmacy and ask if I could get one of those scoops. There's an urban myth going round that you can't get accurate measuring devices because of their potential for 'misuse' by drug dealers apparently. Oh well.

Kind regards

Meri

It's not an urban myth. I don't know if you can't get them, over yonder, but you can't over here. Quietly but efficiently, poof! No more scales. I've got an old triple beam balance somewhere, in a box. Might be worth more than I realized.

Meri,

I do! Though I consistenly question myself whether I'm really sick or just overblowing it. Even going back to childhood, I can remember seeing the halos around lights and thinking "I have glaucoma!"

This kind of thing can be amusing in retrospect, but while you're worrying about it, it's torture!

Sweet Meri,
Over the years I have had such similar experiences as you. I can get so obsessed with the minutest details I drive myself crazy (literally). Right now it's germs, everywhere! I have to carry wipes with me. I have been known to make lists of EVERYTHING I take, eat, ect. in an effort to make SURE that everythign is in balance and not messing each other up. But let me say this. I have found some relief and if you'll pardon my French, it is spiritual. As my understanding of God grows, and who He is, and how terribly much He loves me, as that knowledge grows, my worries decrease. Life is good. He is GOOD.

Hi!

> I do! Though I consistenly question myself whether I'm really sick or just overblowing it.

Thats probably the healthy thing to do. But easier said that done!!

Yes, it is funny in retrospect. At the time, its the most agonising thing ever!! I once thought that I'd burnt my eyes out with a magnifing lense...of course I had done no such thing, but I still called my contact lense practice in panic....luckily they realised that I hadn't actually done any damage....oh well.

Kind regards

Hiya HHM!

> Right now it's germs, everywhere! I have to carry wipes with me.

Oh yes, I'm into that too. I simply have to wash my hands before they go into my mouth, when eating a sandwich, for example. I'm convinced I'm going to poisen myself. I'm always making sure everything is really fresh and things like that.

>I have found some relief and if you'll pardon my French, it is spiritual.

Oh I don't doubt it one bit. I'm trying to become more spiritual, and I've just discovered a Luthern church here where I live (I'm supposed to be a Lutheren, not that it matters!) - still, I doubt I'll make it.... My mother is into Buddism, which is pretty good too. I like all the don't hurt living things, meditation and things.

But honestly, I'm a scientist at heart, so I sort of well, don't think that the plague is caused by God or anything like that. Although I suppose that depends on your definition of God.... I like to think of God as sort of an essence, everywhere and nowhwere at the same time. Well basically I think God is life, but there you go. But seriously I think folks in general (certainly here in the UK) lack spirtulity. Its pure consumerism here!! The mall is the new church. Oh well.

Anyway.

Kind regards

Meri

I'm convinced that germs are your (my) friend.

I don't mean to be difficult here. But they're literally everywhere, and having contact with them makes you stronger because your immune system is activated by contact with things that could potentially be harmful in larger doses.

This might seem worse than you thought-- but I sometimes even eat stuff that's fallen on the floor-- after washing it--but still-- you could drive yourself nuts if you get really literal about the trajectory that things can take from the floor to a surface that you hand will touch--

I'm sure you know this--

but I just need to say that as far as germs go, they do a lot of good--too-- but anyway,

Please get a really accurate scale!-- and take the vitamins!

Merri don't they have C in tablet form? I take 2000 of C every day along with a lot of other vitamins. Plus the meds.

And I the same don't wash my hands before eating as you need to build up your immunity and germ exposure is one way.

When working in a hospital though I washed them constantly. Love Phillipa

Hey, the last time I went overseas my wife said she would never travel with me again. I had a whole bag of supplements for a 3 week trip.
Customs spent some time checking all the unusual powders.
Ah, defeated by the lack of a one gram scoop. You've made me laugh.

We seriously need to form a club--germophobes unite! or owies-are-us.

Today, I've contracted Lyme Disease; Effexor has variously destroyed my liver, my brain, my heart functioning; I have a rare connective tissue disorder that effects my entire body; COPD or lung cancer (depending on the mood); I will be developing cataracts shortly as a guaranteed side effect of one of my asthma inhalers; I have TD and ateriosclerosis; definitely a brain tumor; and I have fingertip cancer.

Actually, the last one is what my husband says because I notice my fingertips are wrinkly all the time and not "fully puffed up" (in my opinion) like "normal" people's are. Yes, well, normal people also don't look exactly like me either. And I have a freckle on my tush that I has probably never seen the sun (at least to my knowing). Never in the diatribe of symptoms (that I even generate! I don't even think that I really have these problems but that I actually create them!), do I think, "I have hypochondria and I need to do something about it." No, the symptoms are very, very real, and must not be questioned!

It does make it a little bit tricky when you do get sick, though. I always wonder, Will I know? Or will I just think that I'm thinking myself sick again????

a MUST SEE for all hypochondriacs....

truer words have never ben spoken, so I'M (also) convinced i'll die from this.

i have ocd and somatic problems, but i don't have true hypochondria. my ex does - what a treat living or traveling with him was. i'm sure he loved living with me & my mdd every bit as much. so it goes.

I have OCD like many of you but I also have learned to realize that not every thing that wheezes is asthma. I do however have a LOT of crappy feelings from my long term anxiety and Depression. My sister and I have humorously named it as "hyperascuses"---lol
If anyone wants to know what that is, feel free to post to me...but be ware it is NOT contagious!

Does anyone know much or have any resources/information about somaticizing and how doctors treat/deal with somaticizers? I'm curious partly because it's difficult for me to suss out whether or not these weird things going on in my body (numbness and tingling, some mild myclonus) are psychogenic or caused by some other situation.

Very frustrating!
