Going to hospital...Waste of time??

Posted by wildcard on October 4, 2005, at 11:51:35

>I have been severely fatigued for quite some time now(very limited ins.) and i know it is not my d/o causing the problem, however i don't know what is. My PDoc upped me to 300 Wellbutrin xl + my 225 Effexor xr. The first few days i had *more* energy but not what i should, being young and *healthy*. I have a baby and this concerns me b/c i can barely hold my eyes open. I slept good last night(1st time in a long time), woke up and had a pot of coffee, then 2 hours later felt exhausted and fell asleep until my lil boy woke me up @ 10:30am when he woke up. I just took an amphetamine to stay awake until his dad can come in and take over since i'm considering going to the hospital. I'm thinking of demanding to stay until someone @#*^!%$ helps me! Any input?

how long ago did your doc up your meds? sometimes it takes a few weeks for the full effect to kick in.
your wellbutrin could still be upped to 450.

give it time, otherwise i think the hospital is the safest place to try out medications, cuz they can stop and start quickly with medical staff around incase of serious side effects. talk to your doctor, voice all your concerns.

maybe adding a stimulant may help you. i'm on Ritalin 20LA, used as AD and stimulant for me. it really makes a difference.

best wishes.

Did you say if they ever checked you for mono or Epstein Barr virus?

If not, I'd look into that. It can even contribute to depression.

The first time I was in the hospital I was there for about 3 days. They switched my meds around and I went home. Didn't do much good. The second time they kept me for several weeks and gave me ECT. Ditto. I've been having suicidal thoughts lately, and my pdoc started talking hospital. Part of me likes the idea of going someplace where I have no responsibilities, but I've taken so many drugs I don't know what there's left to try. And when you get out it's back to the same-old same-old. Plus I carefully structured activities throughout the week that I don't want to disrupt.

I was very tired a few months ago, just dragging myself around and sleeping a lot. I also lost my appetite. I thought it was my depression, but my regular doc prescibed antibiotics even though he couldn't find an infection. It helped within two days.

My current pdoc started talking "hospital" when my suicidal feelings returned, and the thought of getting away from it all is tempting, but once I get out I know I'll be getting back to regular life, which isn't very fulfilling.

So I'd want to know what the pdoc thought I could get out of a hospital stay, other than keeping me in a safe environment.

Just my opinion.

I.

My pdoc wanted to start me on depakote for rapid cycling. I was extremely apprehensive about it. Terrified actually. She suggested a hospital stay for a few days to get started. Maybe that was a trick just to give me the courage to get started on my own. If it was, it worked. :-)

I've heard stories that unless you have real good insurance or unless you are clearly suicidal, they will just patch you up quickly and send you out the door as soon as possible, whether you're ready or not. I've never been on the psych ward, but have come so close to checking myself in many times.

If things are so bad that you are thinking of ways to kill yourself, driving to the hospital is probably a good thing to do. Sadly, there is a lot of mortality that goes along with the diseases we all fight here at psychobabble, mortality that didn't need to happen.

Might have too go to hosp.-PDoc's office a JOKE!

Thx everyone. I havn't went yet, still pondering on it. I called my new *case worker* to explain how badly i was feeling and what a joke! My last cworker quit and the 1st time i met w/ this one, she was too busy for me BUT told me i needed to call the rape crisis center for counseling as that was my problem?. She hadn't even looked over my file..LOL
I wanted my nurse or doc to call back but no one did....i have state ins. so i'm better off than some people though. I just don't see the hospital going to extreme measures to see what is wrong....Who knows?! When u have depression, that is the *reason* for everything, BUT then some will turn rt. around and say depression isn't real...LMAO!!

No they havn't ck'ed those out yet..they tried to turn me away b/c ins..?? They have taken it before and still do but wouldn't? I called the main # to complain and was told basically "my problem". I cannot afford the blood tests which is why i've contemplated going to the ER all day ;-(

hmmm...tough situation :-( Perhaps...you could just visit a regular doc or local clinic and see what's up? I have state=employee insurance, too, and around here there are some private family docs that do really cheap co-pays for that kind of insurance, so it pays to check around a bit. If that doesn't work...treating this like a physical illness (bed rest if possible, increased fluids, possibly antibiotics) might be worth while--if nothing else, you could get a placebo effect, and its entirely possible you will treat a subtle physical ailment. If that fails...stimulants can be very helpful; in my experience, its a good idea to try to get 2-3 X daily dosing, to make sure you don't crash and burn towards the end of the day. Adding more wellbutrin could also help. There are other energizing antidepressants--including some tricyclics like Pamelor--that could be used, but side effects are definitely an issue there. Good luck!

Thank you all that offered help/support! I hung in there as the more i thought about the hospitol, the more i realized that it wld be looked upon as depression and if blood work was drawn, it wld. be a broad area so my PDoc is helping although my new T shouldn't have that title!!! Thank you again ; )

When is your court date? If you dont mind me asking.

Also, have you checked your thyroid lately?

Are you drinking plenty of water? Coffee can dehydrate you. When you are dehydrated, it makes you very tired. We need about 8 glasses of water a day.

I think its the wellbutrin xl. It can produce a lot of anxiety. Your up. And it tires you out. Constantly stimulated with no downer. Not good. Stop that or take a zyprexa or some thing with it. I don't think effexor makes you tired does it?

I think Sebastian's right. Wellbutrin was extremely agitating for me.
