My pdoc wanted to start me on depakote for rapid cycling. I was extremely apprehensive about it. Terrified actually. She suggested a hospital stay for a few days to get started. Maybe that was a trick just to give me the courage to get started on my own. If it was, it worked. :-)
I've heard stories that unless you have real good insurance or unless you are clearly suicidal, they will just patch you up quickly and send you out the door as soon as possible, whether you're ready or not. I've never been on the psych ward, but have come so close to checking myself in many times.
If things are so bad that you are thinking of ways to kill yourself, driving to the hospital is probably a good thing to do. Sadly, there is a lot of mortality that goes along with the diseases we all fight here at psychobabble, mortality that didn't need to happen.
