Nardil working!!!

Posted by saltate on July 26, 2005, at 0:22:56

Hi. I have just begun to significantly feel the antidepressant effects of nardil. It is like night and day. I thought I might never find something to alleviate my treatment resistant depression. It has been seven years and I have been on a plethora of drugs. This is the first true antidepressant response I've had, and I feel like it will last for awhile (just a hunch based on the way things have been gradually improving). This board is a large part of the reason I decided to try nardil in the first place. I am glad I found it. I wonder what it is that makes nardil so different from the SSRI's? For me the ssri's did nothing, yet both medications primarily affect serotonin. Anyway, thank you to everyone on the board who took the time to post about their experiences, especially their success. In a way, success stories are more important then failure stories, and I think it is great when someone takes the time to go back online and write about their successes.

Hi Saltate
You're the bloke who spoke about how you were now having spontaneous positive thoughts and how you now realized how ferociously depression was engrained in your thought processes.
I was very impressed.
And you're on 60mg/d.
Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite.
The whole Nardil side effect thing.

Hello!

IMO, MAOIs are waaaaay underutilized. It's a great shame that so many pdocs aren't familiar with them. The new drugs have taken over.

>For me the ssri's did nothing, yet both medications primarily affect serotonin.

Nardil affects serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, PEA and GABA. Nardil affects the serotonin system in a different way to the SSRIs.

Carolina, There are two MAOI's that are currently being used by a lot of posters. I know Ed will correct me with anything I say that is wrong. They were the first AD's. They cause hypotension and there is a lenghty diet restriction required. Most pdocs in the States don't use them. I believe they're reserved for tx resistant depression. Fondly, Phillipa

Saltate,

Please keep us posted also on any side effects your are experiencing and the dosage you are on. I think a lot of people would especially be interested in any problems you are having with increased hunger/weight gain, insomnia and sexual difficulties.

Thanks,

Marsha

hey. The nardil is amazing. I feel like I have my life back. Anyway, there have been some side effects. As far as insomnia goes, i feel like i cant sleep anymore. I'll lie down for a few hours and go in and out of semi-dreams, but i never really fall asleep. You would think I'd be exhausted, but it's not all that bad. I have felt really tired at times. I have also had badly delayed orgasms. I still can, but it takes alot of effort and time. I haven't had any nausea or low blood pressure. I also drink alot of caffeine, and this may help as I usually have high blood pressure. All these side effects are minor inconveniences compared to the depression lifiting effects. The trade is well worth it.

Ace commented on this a LONG time ago. I guess he had that problem, and then it just went away.
Ace? You out there? Can you comment on this?

Hi Saltate,

I was just wondering how long it took before the Nardil actually kicked in and how you felt before it did?

The reason I ask is that I gave up on Nardil after about a month because I didn't like the way I felt on it anymore than I liked the way I felt being off meds with just the depression. Just wondering how it affected you initially and how long it took to work??

Hi Denise. It took me about a month on the nardil for it to really kick in. I was on 15 mg for 5 days, 30 mg for 5 days, 45 mg for 5 days, then 60 mg for about two weeks I think, maybe more. Before it really kicked in, I felt some sporadic improvement, then it would go away and I'd wonder if it wasn't psycho-somatic. I have been on many anti-depressants and am relentlessly analytical of my own mind state. It kicked in over the course of two or three days. One thing in hindsight I noticed is even before i really felt it i was going out alot more and being more social. I don't have social phobia, but i did have pretty severe anhedonia, so this was a little unusual. One night I stayed out with a firend really late and i realized I was seeing a new aspect of her personality and it fascinated me and I found it exciting that I would be interesting in something trivial. The next morning my friends woke me up and we went out all day, and I found myself really enjoying the night. I met up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while that night, and I found myself telling her about how i thought people in general were worth being invested in. For the sake of compketeness, i should also include the fact that I smoked some marijuana later that night. I know people on the board have mixed feelings about illegal drugs, and I don't recommend it as a means for potentiating anti-depressants, i just want to be honest about my experience. Anyway, i usually don't enjoy marijuana, it makes me detached and anxious, but that night I had the urge to and it was extremely enjoyable. The next morning when I woke up I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the morning and I realized that for the first time in years, I felt undeniably good. It is my third day since then, and I definetly feel that without a doubt and without the possibility of psycho-somatic experience, i have undergone a mental shift where I am back in touch with my positive emotions. I am not out of touch with reality. i got some heavy news from a friend last night, and I was troubled for it by awhile, but instead of dwelling on it for days and obsessing I find I can take it for what it is and recognize it is her issue not mine. This is not something I would have been capable of while depressed.

As far as quitting antidepressants making you feel better, I have experienced this phenomenon too. I would quit, and feel better for a few days, maybe even up to a week, but inevitably the depression would return. I think it might have to do with falling serotonin levels creating a temporary rise in dopamine production, producing a sense of satisfaction with the decision.

Great News!!! Keep us posted! (nm)
