What's the difference between Lexapro and Celexa?

Posted by Jakeman on June 11, 2005, at 23:37:46

Has anybody switched from one to the other and noticed any difference?

Thanks ~ Jake

Celexa made me too tired to do a thing. Lexapro made me very anxious. Fondly, Phillipa

I've been on both but not directly switched from one to the other. And I was only on Lexapro for a couple of months. They seemed very similar to me. The main difference I noted was that Lexapro caused me to wake up a couple of hours too early. And of course the price difference is major.

Thanks for ya'lls feedback. I've tried Celexa but not Lexapro. Both are manufactured by Forest Laboratories... there was some debate on this board a couple years ago that Forest came out with Lexapro just because its patent was about to expire on Celexa. My understanding is that the make-up of the drugs are practically identical. (Maybe some of the chemists around care to comment). At the same time there are numerous reports around that Lexapro has a better side effect profile. Seems like Forest Labs has even claimed that, but I'm not sure. Seems like the Pharma industry likes to engage smoke and mirrors at times. Just wondering about real people's experiences.

Thanks, ~ Jake

I remember the pdoc who Rx;d Celexa for me said there were no side effects. What a liar! I dragged myself around for a month until he would let me go off it.Then he just had me on high doses of benzos. Ativan. My Son just told me that the VA has him the number one doctor for getting Veterans on Disability. And because of his falsified claims a lot of Veterans will now lose their benefits for PTSD. That's what he told me I had too. I'm on Disability. I wonder what he wrote? Anyway he's the one who had his office raided and all his charts confiscated by the Federal Agents. He is under investigation for Illegal distribution of controlled substances and insurance Fraud. Sorry to get off on this tangent. But when I think of all the lies he told me! Fondly, Phillipa

Phillipa, I guess it's another example of how we really have to be educated and involved in what the doctors are doing. I've heard so many stories about the VA. So many promises are made about the antidepressants, especially the new ones. I'm glad we have this forum to share information and support each other.

warm regards, Jake

I'm getting tired on Lexapro. I'm only at 5mg. Even taking it at bedtime. Is this common?

By all means, take Lexapro over Celexa. The real benefit comes by taking Lexapro in the morning (at least for me) as I found it too activating if taken at night. Celexa was very sedating for me.

From remedyfind.com

LEXAPRO:
"effectiveness" rated 6.6
"lack of side effects" rated 5.6
(768 ratings)

CELEXA:
"effectiveness" rated 6.6
"lack of side effects" rated 5.7
(191 ratings)

I read through about 25 reports for each drug looking for the "sedating vs. activating" factor.
It seems to be split roughly 50/50. For both Lexapro and Celexa, some report that it makes them tired, others say it makes them anxious, many reporting insomnia.

My hope was that Lexapro had less side effects that Celexa, and might help insomnia- or at least not cause it.

i'm taking it at bedtime and went to sleep last night without a klonopin or ambien. it was my little experiment. so i think i am on the end of "sedating."

interesting, this was brought up in another thread, that by taking it at night my morning anxiety is beginning to lessen. i take wellbutrin during the day and always woke up having to reach for it right away and get it in my system so i could get out of bed. taking the lexapro at night might fix this for me.

That sounds like you are saying WEllbutrin helps your anxiety in the morning as soon as you take it?

How long have you been on Lexapro?

I've been on Lexapro for about 10 days. Just upping tonight to 10mg. I've been on wellbutrin immediate release 75 mg (5 times daily) for a couple years. because it's immediate release, i have to get it in my system right away. my body does bad stuff on any kind of XL version, so i'm kind of stuck with it. it's the first thing i do in the morning, and yes it levels me right out almost immediately.
