Has anyone tried Anafranil and what side effects have you noticed? I'm afraid after trying risperdal and geodon and having a very atypical side effect that everything else will give me weird side effects and I won't be able to take anything. Help!

Hello,
I have taken Anafranil in the past with the only side effect being slight weight gain. However, others complain more about side effects. One is--at higher doses you can have orthostatic hypotension (dizziness if you stand up too quickly); some I believe complained of drowsiness. So some people have multiple side effects, but some like me have very little. It does not seem to have very strange immediate effects, especially if you go up slowly on dosage.For me, it was a miracle drug for depression and obsessive thinking, until it pooped out on me.
Risperdal and Geodon are in my estimation more powerful drugs, and more apt to result in odd side effects.......so I don't think it means you will have trouble with all medications. I had a very atypical reaction to benzos, yet have been just fine with many other medications.

how long were you taking anafranil before it pooped out on you and what dose?

I know Banga is taking low dose Luvox now. The other answer I don't know. But Banga, what type of reaction did you have to benzos? I've never heard of this before. Fondly, Phillipa

Hi,
I have tried Anafranil. The side effects I experienced were some weight gain, dry mouth and quite a bit of dizziness (orthostatic hypotension). I don't think everyone experiences as much dizziness, but I was already dealing with low blood pressure, so the Anafranil seemed to make it worse for me (especially when I stood up too quickly or was on my feet for an extended period of time). I didn't have any weird side effects.
I hope it works for you with minimal side effects. It is apparently supposed to be one of the best for OCD.

Ive been on Anafranil for a few weeks now and the only side effects ive been having are always feeling hot all time, sweating, dizzyness and constipation. Oh and sexual dysfunction of course lol. But so far its been tollerable. Im feeling a lot better anxiety wise but its too early for it to help my OCD yet. Take care, and if you take it I hope it works for you.

I went on and off Anafranil several times before it pooped out--perhaps a year altogether. I typically used 75mg, or 50mg in combination with other medications.

Right now the max dosage for anafranil is 250mg. I was on 275mg for six years and the side effects were completely tolerable: dizziness when standing too quickly, dry mouth, constipation, sexual dysfunction was limited to delayed ejaculation, and some dizziness.
It worked great for my obsessional ocd. I was taking 1.5 mg klonopin concurrently. The only problems I encountered occurred when I withdrew from the meds without tapering.
