nortriptyline/pamelor - experiences please!

Posted by Maxime on April 9, 2005, at 23:36:41

Hi.

Can you please post your experiences with Nortriptyline/Pamelor. I'm concerned with two main side effects: sedation and weight gain.

Amitriptyline made so sedated I could get past 10 mg and Nortriptyline converts into Amitriptyline ... so I am told.

Please don't think I am silly to worry about weight gain. I can't help it. It's my anorexic brain that is asking that question. You must all think I am very stupid.

Please any responses would be most appreciated.

Maxi

"Galactorrhea in the female" is listed as one of the possible side effects. I'm done with lactating. Also I know two people who lactated on Amitriptyline.

Maxime ... the fat cow.

Maxime,

Pamelor! That is the name I was trying to think of the other day. I'm still a bit brain dead. Not sure why, but I think waking up 3-4 times every night might have something to do with it. ;-)

Pamelor is the TCA that caused me so much trouble were I couldn't pee and had to run the water. I didn't get very far on that at all. I didn't take it but for a few weeks.

And elavil made me jittery, shaky, and the feeling of pins and needles in my arms and legs. I HATED it. They even made me try Triavil (not sure of spelling), but that is elavil with a major tranquilizor. Evil stuff.

I don't think I've tried as many drugs as you have, but believe me I've tried my share! Oh--I posted my old thyroid tests results up above.

Hugs,

MidnightBlue

Thanks MB.

I'm really frustrated and upset right now. I started cutting (nothing serious) to relieve the stress. I hate my life. I hate doctors and pills. I wish I hadn't been born. I was an accident ... and now I have proof.

Dear Maxime,

I'm not sure whether galactorrhea has been reported with nort, sometimes they list all the side effects reported for TCAs, regardless of whether it's been reported with that specific TCA- this is the case for the nort data sheet in the UK.

I found one article that said nort had no effect on prolactin levels and another article which said small increases may occur.

Re the anxiety: perhaps you could take 25mg desipramine for a few days- a short taper if you like.

Re the sedation: When taking amitrip, most of the sedation come from the amitriptyline molecule itself, not from the nort :-) Nort is more likely to cause drowsiness that desipramine but I think it would tend to wear off after a few days/weeks- it wouldn't be as bad as ami.

Love Ed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hi Ed.

I don't think I will try anything until I FORCE someone to do proper bloodwork on me. I'll draw it myself if I have to.

This is exactly correct. Ed is also right about the list of side effects on every PI sheet for nortriptyline that I've seen- they list every side effect reported for tri- and tetracyclic AD's, including amoxapine, which is a combination AP/AD.

I would give it a try- I think highly of this med, as it's the one drug I haven't discarded over the years. From what Ed and I have dug up on Pub Med (or the British equivalent thereof)nortriptyline is less likely than nortriptyline to cause galactorrhea.

Another med you could try is protriptyline but this has a shakier repuation as an AD than either desipramine or nortriptyline.

Best,
z

Maxime, I know how to draw blood. Someone mentioned elavil. I think that may have been what was given to me initially back in my 20's for my first panic attack. If that was the AD, it agitated me so bad the first night that I was up walking around the block crying all night with my exhusband. I never touched it again. Fondly, Phillipa

It really bothers me that they aren't taking better care of you up there Maxime. I have a friend from Canada who always brags to me about how great the health care system is up there.. Now I know that's not alway the case!

It could be so many things... UGH! I can only imagine how frustrated you are.

(((HUGS)))

Ah Maxime,

You are NOT an accident! You were meant to be! My daughter (who we adopted) was the product of a rape. It doesn't matter how she got here. It doesn't matter how you got here. God wanted you here for some purpose. You just can't see that right now or all the people who love you and need you.

I know you hate your life, and doctors, and pills, and cutting, and food. And in the weeks I have been reading this board, long before I ever posted, I grew to love you, too. You are smart, and funny, and so helpful. What a wonderful woman you are!

Take care and fine ONE nice thing to do for yourself whether you think you deserve it or not. Because it doesn't matter how you feel--you ARE a person of value and worth.

Hugs,

MidnightBlue

It depends on which Province you live in. I bet your friend is from British Columbia or Ontario. I live in the Province that wants to separate from Canada! We are a "distinct" society.
