i'm a mixed and cycling bipolar. at the moment im on 1000mg epival (depakote, whatever), 200mg lamictal, as well as 150 effexor and 2mg clonazepam.
i know topamax is usually script'd to counteract weight gain but i've also read that as a mood stabiliser, it tends to work well in evening out the mixed and cycling. been on the aforementioned cocktail for 5 months. my mixed outbursts have calmed down so no more cutting, which is good. but i'm still cycling as often and to the same extent as ever.
i'd love to know what kind of experience ppl have had with t'max as a mood stabiliser. what did the rest of your med-mix look like? all comments much appreciated :)

I was diagnosed with MD and put on Topamax for headaches. While I was on it I never had any problems with mania. But once I went off of it I started rapid cycling. Next I was put on Depakote, which stopped the cycling. But due to side effects (weight gain) I went back on Topamax. Once again, no problems with cycling. But now I've taken myself off again and I haven't had any problems.
That's my story, probably not much help, but it boils down to this: no problems with cycling while on Topamax.Goodluck,

thanks a mill...that's really good to know. i'm trying to get my pdoc to give t-max a go seeing as i'm on depakote now and am still cycling (as if the weight gain and hair loss weren't enough!). also taking effexor and clonazepam. do you mind my asking what the rest of your cocktail looks like?!

Hmm, my meds have changed a bit over the past two years. But I think now I have a good stable regime.Wellbutrin 300 (often given for bipolar)
Seroquel 400 (an antipsychotic good for anti-anxiety as well)
Abilify 5 (antipsychotic)dm

Do you mind my asking all of you what mgs. of topamax you are taking? My daughter is taking 150mg, down from 400mg ...long story, and is a HURRICANE coming and going. Does is help you? I am wanting her to titrate back up as fast as she can (safely). I notice a big difference from the 400mg. -L
