Nardil - weight gain

Posted by Dan Perkins on November 16, 2004, at 16:09:40

Why does Nardil cause weight gain?

I've heard it makes some people crave carbs. Is that the whole story or does it also slow metabolism or do something else to cause weight gain?

Thanks

I think it's mainly metabolism related, perhaps something having to do with it being a hydrazine derivative. Perhaps there is also a tie-in with a similar kind of mechanism responsible for the weight gain with SSRIs and Effexor (for those susceptible to this). I do not believe there is a histamine blockade as the tricyclics and Remeron have, at least not a particularly powerful one. I'd like to know what the actual percentage of people who experience weight gain on Nardil is. For the SSRIs and Effexor, the range appears to be about 17-22%, based on a recent Consumer Report article and survey.

I never had such a craving for sweets until I took Nardil... if you can not learn to control it it is very hard not to gain weight.

Hey Todd, did you gain weight when you tried Nardil?

Absolutely, but it was less than 10 lbs. Part of the gain may have been from the fact that I had been on desipramine right before, which I believe also slowed down my metabolism (from its histamine blockade), but it also killed my appetite even more, such that I had lost about 5 lbs. So I was unnaturally thin to begin with, but what surprised me was that I gained about 8 or 9 lbs in about two months on Nardil. Honestly, part of the reason also was the blasted insomnia was waking me up so early I got in the habit of going out for breakfast in the mornings instead of just having a bowl of cereal. Once I realized what was going on, I did cut calories, but it was all I could do to maintain that weight, and some weeks, I was running over 20 miles.

Yes cutting the calories is good... I didn't even notice I was gaining weight because I was so use to being skinny. I put on about 30 pounds but it was because I was eating a bunch more than I was. When I went off Nardil for a few weeks the weight literally melted off. About 15 pounds but I couldn't hack it without Nardil. I went back on it and this time watched everything I ate. I get my sweet cravings now from Gold apples and drink plenty of diet soda and water. I never really worked out too much but it didn't seem to help lose weight when I was on Nardil.

I have been on Nardil for over a year. I found the only way to control weight gain and food cravings was to go on a fairly strict Atkins diet ( less than 20g of carbohydrate per day). I have been able to maintain constant weight now for over a year and I have no cravings at all for sweets. On this diet, I never feel hungry or deprived. That’s been my experience.

Nardil seems like the right drug for me to try next as Parnate gave out after a while and social anxiety is a big problem that I have in addition to depression.

But this weight gain issue may kill the deal for me. I have a weight problem already that I am working hard on and I'm not sure I want to take something that could derail my weight loss and have me pack on more pounds.
