ADD and anxiety

Posted by jms600 on October 31, 2004, at 16:19:12

Hi,

I am suffering from depression and am currently on 40mg Prozac. I'm thinking of coming off it though as I have GAD, social phobia & panic attacks. I'm sure the Prozac isn't helping them and I don't like SSRIs.

Trouble is I also suffer from ADD.

Is there any drug out there which can be used for treating BOTH severe anxiety AND Attention Deficit Disorder? I was thinking of asking my p/doc about trying some Strattera combined with a low dose of Zyprexa.

Any comments on this combo?

I would give a TCA a trial. Nortriptaline or desipramine have been used for depression, ADD, and anxiety disorders.

Consider high-dose Provigil. At least one person has switched from adderall to provigil 600mg/day and is reporting good results. I would also try desipramine before Strattera, just because the half-life of desipramine is much smoother/longer-lasting. Desipramine also has pretty few side-effects vs. other tricyclics.

I have co-morbid ADD and Anxiety too. I wish you luck in finding something that works.

The MAOIs are very good on both social phobia and panic attacks and relatively good on anxiety, with Nardil probably being a superior anxiolytic. Parnate has shown some efficacy for ADD due to its stimulant effects. I did not think desipramine was particularly good for anxiety myself, as my anxiety levels are relatively low, and it increased them. I think nortriptyline is superior for anxiety, but it is probably not as good for ADD as desipramine. I think both would probably show efficacy for panic attacks, as this seems to be an area where tricyclics consistently do well.

Personaly I find dexedrine does not cause anxiety and can even be calming in low doses (2.5mg).
I am on a combination of dexedrine and clomipramine.
Clomipramine is very effective for anxiety (but not social anxiety), and the side effects are not all that bad.
Alternativly you could combine a stimulent with an anti psychotic med. I've heard that anti psychotics can take the edge of stimulent anxiety, just a thought!
