Hallucinate Smells?

Has anyone out there had any olfactory hallucinations?

Yes, I have. Before I got on mood stabilizers I had olfactory hallucinations. Oddly enough Depakote and Tegretol made them worse. Once I was off those two drugs and on stuff that worked they went away.

I have always had them since I can remember. They get worse during a migraine, and when I'm hypomanic. What's weird is they even get through nasal congestion.

I get the same thing when I'm hypomanic, but only med-induced hypomania. Effexor and Celexa/Lexapro were the ones that really did that. Usually, it is some kind of burning or rotting smell, like a mouse under the fridge or gas leaking, leaves burning, food frying, etc...

I've had more sensitivity to smells, but I think it's a combination of the dry mouth causing me to smell more of what's going on in my mouth as I breathe, the same mucus membrane drying in the sinuses allowing me to be more sensitive to actual smells, and my brain chemistry being in flux, thus causing me to be my aware of the smells. I'll smell things that probably are really there, in other words, but be much more sensitized to them.

For me, at any rate, it tends to fade after the adjustment phase.

That's just for whatever it's worth.

Yes I have had them before a migraine and when going off of some medications.

Yes, I have, and so do many people who have migraines. Often my migraines are preceeded by strong odours that seem not to actually be there.

It is also a sign of some other brain disorders.

I also believe that I have an extraodianry sense of smell - I often smell things before others do, and I smell things that others can't.

Tell what you're experiencing.

I have them. Smelling ammonia is the worst, but there are also others.

Yes, I've experienced this. I think many of these olfactory hallucinations are triggered by experiences, and often its even difficult to know the difference between triggered hallucinations or actual smells that trigger feelings. If that makes any sense.

But I do know about the migraine connection as well as other possible indications of other disorders so I would get it checked out if you haven't already to be on the safe side.

Absolutely. I experienced csa as a child and I've re-experienced smells associated w/the experiences.

I also have had auditory hallucinations and delusional thinking. I am currently taking abilify, which has made all of my hallucinations and delusional thinking pretty much stop, and even seem ridiculous to me now. I have been diagnosed schizophrenic, and know that hallucinations are a part of that, but have not read or heard much regarding smelling things that are clearly not there. In the dead of winter I have smelled distinct floral smells outside, such as hyacinth and lilac. I live somewhere where it is sub zero most of the winter, so I know these smells are not real. I also smelled a wasp that flew by me and it smelled like pepper.
