Meds for energy

Posted by Waki on September 20, 2004, at 21:02:02

I've noticed that the ADHD meds like dexedrine and concerta and the AD Wellbutrin all increase NE and DA. They are somewhat energizing.

If these meds don't give enough energy what else is out there?

I use the term energy beacuse Provigil keeps me awake but does not give me more energy.

Does more energy only come from meds that increase the heart rate?

Increased heart rate does not give me more energy. I have the same reaction to Provigil that you describe. In my case the lack of energy is do to endocrine imbalance. I'm hopefull that that the meds that are being developed to adjust the HPA will be helpfull. I am thinking of trying HGH although it is quite expensive maybe it will have a positive effect. The understanding of mood disorders is not good, we can only hope something will be discovered soon. Best wishes.

I take a caffeine pill (200 mg) each day and that gives me energy. I also drink tea with caffeine.

i am hyperthyroid, yet I still take provigil for mental alertness and energy. if you lack physical energy, amphetamine or ritalin is obviously a more logical option, but they aren't strong longer term solutions.

Diet {better proportion - higher protein which affects DA and NE versus sugars and carbs which have a stronger effect on serotonin which when increased blunts you and saps motivation} and regular strenuous exercise {again dopamine among other benefits} if possible.

aside from typical stims, I can only think of wellbutrin and provigil.

I wouldn't recommend it. Prednisone is tough on people who have to take it for other medical reasons (like me, for kidney disease). My experience with it is that it increased anxiety and short-temperedness without any positive effect on energy. Some people just about go out of their skin with it. I literally warned people when I was having a "Prednisone Day."

Prednisone is a very powerful drug with many serious side effects (like bone marrow depression, thinning of skin, decreased immunity) that I wouldn't take it without serious reason. Further, my pdoc told me that it has to be tapered veeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyy slowly or it will induce depression.

Hope this helps,

Ray

Try Ritalin up to 60mgs
Dexedrine up to 60mgs
Adderall up to 60mgs
or if you can, go for the holy grail of "energy medication" ADHD med 'Desoxyn' 30mgs or so
