Know for sure how remeron causes weight gain?

Posted by Holli-Anne on June 14, 2004, at 12:30:03

Hi.

New to this site.. very cool.
I am 20 yrs old and hae struggled with severe anorexia for 8 yrs. I am at a healthy weight now, however. I started remeron 6 months ago with no side efffect of weight gain until a month ago. Does anyone know for sure HOW Remeron promotes weight gain... is it an appetite increase? or is it metabolism? I seem to be getting this ring around my belly.... of fat.. iim terrified.. any thought???

My understanding is that it's mainly appetitive--much of this being from Remeron's extremely powerful H1 histamine blockade. I've read anecdotes from people on drugs with much weaker H1 blockades than this who had severe carbohydrate cravings, which will obviously tend to put weight on a person. The other factor is the serotonin 2C receptors, which are also related to appetite. Stimulating these receptors (as Prozac does) will tend to reduce appetite; however, Remeron blockades all serotonin 2 receptors, and this will tend to increase appetite even further. AFAIK, Remeron is the most notorious AD for weight gain.

Admittedly I'm not up on the pharmacologic properties of Remeron, but my personal experience makes me certain it tweaks your metabolism. I do believe the people who say it makes them hungry too. I really cut back from my normal eating, snacked on raw veggies, increased exercise, ate small portions of bread, etc. It was nice to be able to eat *more* of everything once I stopped it. This drug is notorious for the weight gain, but if it's working well for you, that's important. It's probably worth working with it and seeing if the weight issue is manageable for you. Good luck.

I've just stopped taking remeron because of the weight gain (and it wasn't working psychologically) - I really know what you mean about the ring of fat around your belly.

I did feel hungrier when I was on remeron, but I made sure I ate alot more healthily and upped my exercise considerably, however my weight kept increasing.

As someone else said - if its working for you, that's the main thing, and you will have to weigh up the pros and cons of taking it.

Good luck
