Hi.

I get the feeling that Nardil is more pro-serotonergic than tranylcypromine when treating depression. I'm not sure why. It might be an enzyme selectivity thing or an affinity thing or a regional distribution thing.

I'm not really sure if that's the case, or if it's just that Parnate is more pro-dopaminergic in comparison. The tranylcypromine molecule is very similar in structure to that of amphetamine and does have a direct stimulant effect; although, it is certainly not as powerful as amphetamine is. Still, it seems likely that this is the reason that Parnate is skewed towards dopamine, anyway.

Perhaps, then, Nardil might be an example of a "pure" MAOI, with serotonergic effects just naturally dominating those that are dopaminergic. I'd be interested in hearing from anyone more familiar with Nardil's pharmacology, though, and whether its traditional characterization as being nonselective deserves further elaboration.

I found that Nardil was much better than Parnate at treating anhedonia. I once took a very selective MAO-A inhibitor named clorgyline. For what it's worth, I found clorgyline to be more like Nardil and less like Parnate for anhedonia. Also, both Nardil and clorgyline produced anorgasmia while Parnate did not.

will nardil make my heart race

will nardil make my heart race like effexor ??

I had heart palps galore on Effexor. It is clear to me that I need some noreinephrine action because I still get very panicky on SSRI's. Effexor worked but made my heart race a mile a minaute, this is also why I needed to drop parnate cause the higher doses shot my BP up.

Has anyone taken parnate and the others who might know if nardil is very stimulating. (how much less stimulating than parnate is it)

--Effexor made my heart race (it was also not very effective) It also raised my blood pressure..Nardil lowered my blood pressure, at one time it was 90/70...I experienced postural hypotension during the first couple of weeks.

-- I have taken Parnate... It was more stimulating than Nardil. I noticed a definite "stimulation" about 30 min after taking it (I took 40mg)..I feel a similar effect with Nardil (60mg), but it is far less stimulating, and feels more similar to a relaxed mild stimulation (borderline euphoria ...more similar to a MDMA feeling)

...also, Nardil and Parnate do not differ in enzyme selectivity, however, Parnate has some direct catecholamine stimulating properties whereas Nardil increases GABA levels.

The old Nardil is very much less stimulating than Parnate. Even the new Nardil is less stimulating.

Drugs that have strong effects on norepinephrine reuptake have a tendency to induce tachycardia in susceptible individuals. I did not experience this on Effexor but certainly did on the tricyclics desipramine and protriptyline (Vivactil), as well as Strattera. My resting heart rate rose to as high as 100-110 on both the Vivactil and Strattera.

However, Nardil does not generally do this, even though it does have a powerful effect on norepinephrine. Due to the particular mechanism by which MAOIs work, heart rate and blood pressure very often go down; although, this is less true of Parnate. You can think of Parnate as essentially equivalent to Nardil plus a weak amphetamine, a combination that will prove problematic in some instances as far as causing a blood pressure spike. In fact, this is likely the reason that Parnate is more prone to cause spontaneous hypertensive crises (ones occurring without ingesting any of the prohibited drugs or foods) than is Nardil.

My own experience on Nardil, which I've been on since March 1, and on 75 mg/day for almost three weeks, is that my BP has gone down so much I am going to discontinue my lisinopril BP med after tomorrow. Combined with a resting heart rate that is now very often in the mid 50's (normal for me is mid 70's), I am coming close to fainting on occasion from low blood pressure.
