Suggestions on AD/Anti-anxiety med

Posted by seanwrx on April 8, 2004, at 23:59:08

I head to my p'doc tommorow afternoon and unfortunetly I think I need to get on some sort of AD again. I have taken quite a few over the years, most recently coming off of 6 months of Remeron. I was still anxious on the Remeron, plus the weight-gain, sluggishness, etc. Since coming off of Remeron ( 3 weeks) my depression has got worse. I deal with the anxiety by taking klonopin as needed, but since I have GAD I tend to need to take it quite often.

I need to get on an AD that helps with my depression, gives me some energy and alertness but that doesn't aggrevate my anxiety. Ironically, I had decent luck on prozac, but for some reason I switched, I don't recall right now, but I think it was the dizziness/light-headness it gave me, which increased my anxiety.

I have taken Tyrosine for a little over a month now, and this past week I started taking Glutamin, 5HTP, and GABA as well as flaxseed oil, and multivitamins. Its probably too soon to expect anything of course.

A friend takes Lexapro and Wellbutrin and does well on it, though he gets 'shakey' easy he says and his appetite is ferocious (though he hasn't gained much weight). Eating seems to calm down the nervousness. He really doesn't have an anxeity problem though, so if there is a side-effect he just chalks it up to the med and gets on with it. Lucky guy I guess.

I am approaching doomsday it feels like and have thought about cashing it all in and doing the unthinkable. But I have struggled for this long, and many more have struggled longer so I just pray the next day is a good one.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

I would try Prozac again & add a little Remeron to counter it's side effects. Prozac could counter Remerons weight gain side effect.

I take Effexor+Remeron & find this combination somewhat anxiolytic. It's not as anxiolytic as Valium, but my anxieties are secondary to my depression.

Cheers,
Panda.

Meds which help with anxiety:
1. Klonopin and Nardil - gold standards
2. Amisulpride (and Sulpiride) - I wish there were done few studies to evaluate whether Amisulpride increases GABA levels, just like benzos, because while it was working - I felt the exact Klonopin-like anti-anxiety effect. There is a study which shows that Amisulpride attaches to GHB receptors (the only antidepressant which does so! except of course Xyrem/GHB) - so this could explain some interaction with GHB/GABA system.
3. Xanax or GHB/Xyrem for short-term anxiety relief
4. Supplements: Picamilon, L-Theanine, Kava-kava
5. For those having ADD - amphetamine-based drugs: Adderall,Dexedrine have anti-anxiety effect (at least for me, and from what I read about others effects)
6. Barbiturates - I don't know if they are still used/sold, but they used to be quite effective, although addictive and dangerous (mixed with alcohol).
7. Prozac and whole SSRi family - they have only *fair* effect when it comes to anti-anxiety
8. MAOi: Parnate, although it is quite stimulating too ; Aurorix/Mannerix (moclobemide) - supposedly quite useful, although there are not so many studies done on it
