SSRIs feeling 'flat'

Posted by jms600 on March 28, 2004, at 15:22:41

Has anyone experienced a flatness of imotions on SSRIs?

Did they treat the depression but stop you from feeling happy? Did they make you unmotivated?

I'm having a terrible time with unmotivation at the moment and I'm just wondering if it could be down to taking SSRIs?

If so whats the answer? Would dopamine based drugs help such as the Atypical anti-psychotics help?

I am exeriencing that very same thing as you speak. I have complained about seeing things that should have made me cry, and felt nothing, been in situations that were potentially joyful events and I felt nothing. Finally I went and saw the Passion of the Christ and felt nothing. That was when I had decided I had enough. right now I am unclear as to the solution. I have always needed and SSRI to keep me stable. However, I have a new doctor and he is willing to make some changes and try new things .Could it be possible that I might actually get by without prozac. Well I am crossing my fingues and praying! The combination of drugs he has me on now may work. Thats My believe, that everything will get better if I can withstand the rough times and keep fighting the good fight!!

Never Give Up!
Peggy

Hi Guys,

I'm at 15 mgs of Lexapro and have had that "flat" feeling since increasing to 15 mgs from 10 mgs. Three days ago I added Wellbutrin to the mix to try and help with the flat feeling (and some other things too). But, I'll let you know if it does the trick.

When I talked to my pdoc he said the flat feeling is quite common with SSRIs...and of course, there isn't one solution that works for everyone because meds effect individuals so differently. I guess all we can do is keep trying to find the right combo of meds.

K.

I know how you feel or perhaps more adequately how you don't feel. The ssri's make me flat, emotionless ... to a point that the shrink now says I might mes schizoid ... uhhun ... right.

Anyway, be carefull with the atypical AP ... not only did the sedate me and make me more flat ... the made me confused.

I have tried Anafranil in the past, a tryciclic, and many SSRI (Prozac, Celexa, and Paxil). I think that with Anafranil I experienced less flatness, and I think it can be dued to its NE-uptake. I've asked to someone on this board that was using noradrenergic meds if he experienced flatness, and he says that on converse, he was more able to feel his emotions. So, maybe, flatness is more related to Serotonin and using meds that have NE-ruptake properties can help.

I would suggest what Kathyrlex is doing. Try adding some Wellbutrin. Or, try adding Provigil.

I was on and off the SSRIs for about ten years. Felt exactly what you're talking about. Now I've been off them for about 9 months, and I *STILL* feel just as flat and emotionless as I did when I was taking them.

Has anyone else had this experience? Have these drugs permanently changed my brain chemistry so that I will never again be able to feel joy? What a terrifying prospect...

Haven't felt excitement in 10 years.
