i found this while surfin and it made me think of yer entry...

Acute Abstinence Syndrome
When the blood alcohol drops below a certain level in the chronic stage alcoholic, the drinker will experience symptoms of the acute abstinence syndrome (AAS). AAS is what causes alcoholics to drink again within a few hours of their last drink, eventually causing them to drink in the morning or even in the middle of the night. They must maintain certain blood alcohol levels or experience withdrawal symptoms because the body has developed a need for alcohol. If the alcoholic is unable to get alcohol or chooses to abstain, AAS symptoms can become severe and last from one to ten days. There are two types of AAS. In Type I there are five stages of acute withdrawal. Stage I is marked by hyperactivity of the nervous system. This takes the form of the following symptoms:
1. Tremors
2. Loss of appetite
3. Sweating
4. Nausea, vomiting
5. Low stress tolerance
6. Hyperactivity
7. Confusion
8. Poor memory

The next stage is hallucinosis. Although persons know who they are and where they are, reality around them becomes distorted. There is the illusion that things are happening which are not happening. Objects may appear to move, noises may be heard, physical sensations may be experienced which in reality are not occurring. The person may be aware that things are not as they are perceived, but the strong illusion creates confusion, fear, and even panic.

The next stage is delirium and disorientation. At this point persons lose touch with reality and become confused as to where and who they are. Hallucinations usually occur with the belief that they are real. The person is confused, excited, incoherent, and frightened

I feel Marijuana started my worry or panic attacks because I had the first ones when I was too high and later on in life they came in different situations, so yes I agree it did change my mentals no doubt.

> YES!!! Alcohol can worsen panic attacks and all forms of anxiety as well as all forms of depression. This is because alcohol is a potent central nervous system depressant drug and it makes you more depressed. Where there is severe anxiety and panic, there is also some depression. You need to realize that depression usually goes hand in hand with severe panic attacks/GAD/PTSD, etc.

Hello, I would like to add that roughly 30% of systemic diseases mimic mental illnesses, for example, a very commmon mimicker of anxiety is an underlying Hyperthyroidism. There are volumes of good medical resources which discuss the importance of ruling out the possibility that a mental conditon is secondary to a primary and undetected disease. Uncontrolled diabetes comes to mind and although pure hypoglycemia as state maybe rare: Hypoglycemia and hangovers have been widely described as similar to anxiety symtoms by many people who suffer from them. I look back and read what Mr. Sad PuppyDog wrote to me months ago and I feel very offended by that. "Keep it up and Id say eventually you will probably end up inpatient for a few weeks, probably will get ECT recommended to you one day. I can read your post and just tell...sorry." You dont know me, you cannot assume something by a simple POST. And where did you come up with Ecstacy? I have never touched that stuff in my life. Yes, I drink occasionally and feel like crap the next day. Turns out I am hypoglycemic. So Should I run off and get ECT now? I have been doing much better since I was finally diagnosed. I cut down on the drinking, I got a new job that I love, my band is releasing a new CD in a couple of weeks and we are going on tour. I am a flutist and a damn good one. Could you tell by my post that I was talented? NO... just wanted to put me down and make yourself feel better. Thank you, I am done. I hope everyone understands where I am coming from, you cannot make judgements of people when you don't know the whole story.

Alcohol/ PANIC/ANXIETY ATTACKS » panic_attack

Hi again PA,

I have taken a break (almost a month now)from daily drinking, and I can tell you that even though the first week or so my body felt very panicky, I have been more calm over all w/o drinking. My Dr. gave me some Serax to help with that first week - glad he did.

Someone said something about being an alcoholic - I don't agree with those labels. There are a lot of harm reduction groups like Moderation Management that a lot of people have success with. As you mention, you have a lot going for you, and you just happen to be aware that things might be better if indeed you could reduce the anxiety if it is related to drinking. Doesn't mean you are an alcohilic or will wind up in detox. Jeesh.

I was reading on about.com about drinking on Atkins, and they say that alcohol actually lowers blood sugar. Sometimes I think that the day after anxiety feelings just come from putting your body under so much stress and maybe being dehydrated. Anyhow, I miss drinking a lot less than I like not feeling like that anymore.

Good luck, once again -

PV

No you didn't he offended me too, and whats funny is he had the nerve to say something as silly as alcohol can't effect blood sugar or do you have proof that diabetes gets worse when you drink etc., like that isn't common sense carbohydrates effect that. Good luck to you Cynthia or Panic Attack as you call yourself, I drank on Thursday and got that GOD AWFUL thing again in the morning and felt like square one all over again, so I didn't touch a drop yesterday. I cut back alot on drinking and unless it is a holiday or a big night don't really even enjoy it at all anymore to say the least, it just gets me depressed and anxious and ruins my train of though, it destroys your mind (A good mind at that). I will feel really good without drinking for a week or so and have these clear thoughts which could help me out in school or a job etc., then I drink and stuper myself again and that cloud is back!!!! Know the feeling? Anyways I am glad to see you are up and going, thats great.

My "other" has been dealing with panic attacks for about the last three months. Getting laid off, haveing a young family, and being a newly married couple all have contributed to it Im sure.
HOWEVER, my husband drinks every night. Alot. He doesnt get ugly he acts normal gets calm and goes to bed. During the day lately he has had classic panic attacks. He turns pale, shakes, his chest hurts, he can't breathe, and he has a problem with going outside. The earth turning sends him into total anxiety.
The alcohol was'nt really a problem, we are young. But to have found a link to these panic attacks to alcohol is WONDERFUL!
It's hope for our future. We can handle these panic attacks now. ....Maybe.

Little miss you are getting me to draw to lines and relate now with what is going on, it is more situational and kind of like unkown things you need to get out and deal with that is causing these like position in life and so on, that seems to be what is getting to your husband and his panic attacks the last three months, it is eating at him and he doesn't even really know it. I am jobless right now and not too happy either, that is why this is happening IMO!!! Anxiety problems can come from negative thoughts and he probably has a ton of those, the alcohol just makes it worse, so you have to deal with those problems you are having and the anxiety problems as well if you ever plan on getting any better. Thank you for posting that it run a bell in my head and really made me think to say the least, keep in contact and let me know how it is going because I am having the same exact problems right now, alchohol just makes it worse though.

Hey Sean!!! Nice to hear from you again. Yah, I'm still having the sameeeeee problem. Feel great one day, then go out and drink, and feel like dying all day the next. BUT!!! I have found something that really helps! I take a vitamin B and C before drinking and I dont feel as bad the next day. Try it next time, It may just work ;) Well, I have a concert tonight and Im contemplating on rather or not I should buy some beer. You see, I play better when I got a buzz going on. But I have a realllllly bad cold and I know it wouldnt be the smart thing to do, but then again, I want to have fun. So I think I will. Talk to you guys later.

Yeah alcohol kills B Vitamins in the body and that causes mental problems, so replacing it (Mainly Thiamin, try a 50 mg extra on that too) is a great idea when you drink, C too. Zinc and Magnesium are lost too so you should really try adding some of those too to keep stores in your body (Water soluble vitamins). Niacin works wonders for me when I have a hangover and lets me sleep instead of waking up at 9 or so panicing with a heart racing problem, it seems to produce deep sleep and relaxes you, so try some extra Niacin the next day, but start slow because it causes a flush (Which isn't dangerous but annoying).
