10 days on Zoloft

Posted by msurtees on December 3, 2003, at 8:19:44

I think I'm just looking for some encouragement...

I've been on Zoloft for 10 days and, although I've felt a little weird (sort of a hyper alertness) the stress, worry, anxiety have already vanished.

This morning, however, I woke up and all of those awlful feelings are back. I guess I'm just wondering - hoping -

is this normal...up days...down days? I'm feeling better again right now though.

I'm kinda driving myself crazy by constantly stopping and asking myself, "How do I feel...is the medicine helping?"

(My biggest fear is the weight gain!)

Thanks.

Yes it is normal.

When you've stopped asking yourself "is it working?" then you know for sure. You will notice if it works or not. 10 days is a short time, you'll have to be patient, it may take several weeks for the drug to "kick in".

You should not worry too much about that, first find a med that works for your depression.

Good luck.

Zoloft has been a life saver for my 16 yr old son. He has schizophrenia. He takes 75 mg in morning and 20 mg zyprexa(anti psychotic) at night. Zoloft has smoothed out his ups and downs, quelled his anxiety and eliminated his panic attacks. The dosage is critical on this med. Some say 50 mg is not enough and 100 mg is too much. It will act differently for each individual but it seems to help nearly everyone. It can take a few weeks to take full effect though so if it isn't working well for you in a month you might need to check with your Dr about adjusting the dosage.

hi msurtees,

i have been on zoloft now for almost 3 months and also found that at first, i seemed to be up and down and up and down. it actually worsened my anxiety initially, at the lower doses, which i tried to manage with exercise and neurontin prn. i take 150mg which i find good for anxiety (at 175 i felt too sleepy), but i augment with cytomel and lamictal for tough depression (that's just me, i'd say not the common story).
as for appetite increase, well, i have felt the opposite happen--i don't have one anymore. i don't even remember what cravings felt like, and food seems more of a chore, just something i have to remind myself to deal with. it's definitely preferable to weight gain, but i am not so happy with this side effect b/c depression left me really thin anyway and gaining has been near impossible on zoloft.
maybe this can alleviate some of your fears though. ;)
cheers,
liz
