hi msurtees,

i have been on zoloft now for almost 3 months and also found that at first, i seemed to be up and down and up and down. it actually worsened my anxiety initially, at the lower doses, which i tried to manage with exercise and neurontin prn. i take 150mg which i find good for anxiety (at 175 i felt too sleepy), but i augment with cytomel and lamictal for tough depression (that's just me, i'd say not the common story).
as for appetite increase, well, i have felt the opposite happen--i don't have one anymore. i don't even remember what cravings felt like, and food seems more of a chore, just something i have to remind myself to deal with. it's definitely preferable to weight gain, but i am not so happy with this side effect b/c depression left me really thin anyway and gaining has been near impossible on zoloft.
maybe this can alleviate some of your fears though. ;)
cheers,
liz
