More supplementation-babble... any suggestions?

Posted by Caleb462 on April 28, 2003, at 2:43:27

Okay... I seem to be getting on a supplement kick here... but it's fun, interesting and healthy so... here's my regimen now....

1 Multi-Vitamin per day
1 B-complex + C per day
600 mg SAM-e per day
1200 mg EPA/1000 mg DHA per day.

Tommorow, I'm going out to buy some magnesium... I've looked before, but all I saw was magnesium oxide. I'm going to go to a health food store, hopefully they will have a better form of magnesium. Any thoughts on what dosage I should start out with on mag.?

I may also pick up some GABA, but haven't decided yet.

So... is there anything else you folks could reccomended? Vitamins, herbs, amino acids, whatever else?

Zinc and selenium. About 30 mg/day zinc. 100-200 mcg/day selenium.

Someone on this board posted NOT to take fish oil at the same time of day/night as minerals, like magnesium, zinc, etc...they said the fish oil disrupted the minerals from being absorbed...what do you think? Thanks, as always!

Larry, MUCH more important question, please help..

Questions for you, please:

1) Prozac made me VERY Angry/Irritable, Zoloft does too....WHY? What is it about those 2 ssri's that could cause that? (If it helps, Lamictal also made me that way) Geez, I REALLY need to figure this out! Certain meds (mostly SSRI's though) have that effect...it's my worst side effect.
(Also, if it helps, Remeron, at 45 mg. sped me up too much (very jittery) but did NOT make me angry..Anafranil did NOT make me angry either(those 2 meds are anti-dep's but do NOT make me angry)....is there any way to deduce why the ssri's cause anger/temper problems? THANKS!!!

Just a guess... but perhaps you just can't tolerate high serotonin (ssris) and high adrenergic (remeron) activity. Yet the sedating anti-histamine effects of remeron and anafranil may have prevented the anger you would have otherwise felt. Again... just a guess.

I have the same reaction (irrational anger, very unusual for me) to SSRIs, especially Zoloft. Some people just aren't wired right for SSRIs, as my pdoc quickly realized for my case.

"I have the same reaction (irrational anger, very unusual for me) to SSRIs, especially Zoloft".

>>>>>>V---it wasn't an all-the-time anger problem, correct? I'll feel fine for awhile but then, sometimes unpredictably and suddenly "BOOM", I'll just "lose it"...I actually get a "feeling", anger 'swells' up inside of me and I can "feel" the agitation inside of me (feels like my face and head get a very "flushed" feeling, if you know what I mean?) Then, shortly after I lost it, I realize that I just made an "ass" out of myself by looking like a hot-tempered fool. Does this description differ from your reaction? thnx!

That's pretty close -- fortunately, I never completely "flipped out" or did anything really embarassing. The hot/flushed feeling was there; I would just suddenly feel a rush of anger towards some minor thing someone said, for example, and lash out verbally. Again, nothing so serious that it couldn't be repaired with a quick apology and vague excuse about being in a bad mood, but it was frustrating and inexplicable. In each case it was sudden and brief.

I didn't stay on Zoloft long; however, I was on Prozac at various doses for extended periods of time and had some similar experiences. Now I just avoid SSRIs -- they (at least the few I've tried) alter my thinking and behavior in strange ways, induce rapid mood cycling (besides anger), and have a host of other side effects that I find intolerable. Plus, they don't help much with depression for me, and make my anxiety worse. My pdoc has encouraged me to avoid them -- he says they're great for many people, but reactions like mine aren't that uncommon in his experience.

V----Thanks! I appreciate your response. Final question on the SSRI's: Did you ever just get into "mean" moods on them? (I know we talked about the sudden anger outbursts...I completely understand! But did you ever just have periods of time where you just felt "mean", where you would "feel" a mean, nasty, negative, verbally sarcastic "bothered" state come over you...and then that state just "leave" a little later? Even though NOBODY even did ANYTHING to you? (Kind of sounds like I'm describing PMS...but I'm a guy....does that ring a bell at all? thnx

Yes -- now that you mention it, that did happen too. It rarely lasted long, and was unpredictable. That's a large part of the problem -- with the SSRIs I've tried, my moods were all over the place, and frustratingly unpredictable.

Thanks Viridis! (nmi) Re: Larry, MUCH more
