treating the stimulant crash

Posted by Peter on August 24, 2002, at 2:05:22

Hi all:
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to help alleviate the "crash," or rebound anxiety/depression that occurs when a stimulant wears off? I take 25-30mg adderall daily and sometimes my last dose wears off early evening and all of a sudden I'm anxious/depressed (like a cocaine crash but much less severe). So I often just stay indoors at night, try to find a distraction, and don't want to talk to anyone. This is abviously not good. I also take depakote 750mg, klonopin 2mg, and zoloft 87.5mg; I would think all of these would help with the emotional lability caused by the adderall crash, especially the klonopin of which I take 1.5mg in the evening. Any other suggestions?

If you take 2 doses a day, take you second one later in the afternoon. If you start crashing during the day, up your dose.
I was at 60mg XR and told my pdoc I just wanted to sleep when I got home. She was not wanting to go higher. I had an appt. with her at noon a few months ago and had already taken 60 mg. I told her I had no problems with BP or anything so she took my BP..125/70. Now I take 90mg and it's the right dose for me with the other meds I take. I can go to bed at 10, wake up at 6..no problem. Are you taking the extended release?

A friend of a friend, a paramedic, was the first kid in the Dallas ISD to be prescribed Ritalin for ADD. He still takes it 40 years later and is doing great.

Talk to your doc.

You didn't say if you've tried Ritalin or if's appropriate for your condition, but you could try Concerta (the extended release Ritalin). It lasts I think 8-10 hours, and has an excellent time release mechanism; I used to bounce all over the place with regular methylphenidate (as opposed to now on Concerta).

>I tried concerta once before for a few days when my doc had me trying out a few stims. It felt sort of wierd to me-I'm not used to ritalin. I also find that for me, while longer-acting preparations (concerta, adderall XR) are smoother, they are not as effective for motivation/energy/focus as immediate-release, nor do they allow for as flexible dosing.
Thanks,
Peter

Take clonodine or textrex

Clonidine (blood pressure med) didn't help me with stimulant crash. It would make it worse sometimes. I would feel so numb and apathetic it was horrible. Just my experiences tho....

Adderall was the first stimulant I tried. I found the crash to be unbearable. I now take Ritalin and don't really notice much of a crash at all, just a little bit tired.

Phil,
How do you find Adderall XR, I've heard some bad things about it
