Loosing the hair on my legs

Posted by Michael D on March 27, 2002, at 9:54:31

I'm hoping to figure out if this is because of the medication I'm on.

Basically, I used to have moderately thick hair. Over the last year or so, it's mostly disappeared, except for a little bit on the front of my legs. Has anybody else had this?

I was thinking that it could be the Celexa.

When you find out, let's patent it and market it to women. That would be a lovely side effect!

P.S. I might even become lackofbeardy!

Hi Beardy,

I hope I'm not out of bounds here if I ask you whether you've been to an endocrinologist for a full work up? The reason I ask is that there are many medical mimics of depression, and endocrine problems are notorious for causing affective disorders. Some endocrine problems cause excess facial hair in women. Sometimes when the endocrine problem is cleared up, the depression lifts.

Bekka:

A past post of mine in PSB explained the moniker. It comes from an Ani Difranco song called, "'tis of thee."
"i ran away with the circus
cuz there's still some honest work left for bearded ladies
but it's not the same going town to town
since they put everyone in jail
except the cleavers and the bradys."

It's really just a metaphor for freak or for a person who's different and can't (or doesn't want to!) hide it.

If you thought facial hair was really my problem, then I thank you sincerely for your advice. (I didn't know that about facial hair and depression, so thanks also for the info.)

If you knew already that I didn't have a beard and you were just being funny, then good for you. You got me!

(But there really is hair on my legs. I promise!)

Hi Michael,

Do you notice hair loss from your head? My pdoc told me that nearly all of these medicines CAN cause SOME hair loss. Usually patients complain about hair loss from their heads, however. I had some hair loss from my head on Celexa, but it wasn't that bad. I didn't get any bald spots, but when I brushed my hair, much more hair would be on the brush bristles than prior to using Celexa. The worst hair loss I ever had was from Depakote (Valproic Acid). I may be wrong about this, but I wonder whether drug-induced hair loss would be so selective as to just affect the legs? I would think it would occur to hairs all over the body???

A friend of mine (male, 35 years old) started loosing hair on his legs when he hit the 30's.
He's not taking any AD (he's taking a low dose of benzos though).
As far as i am concerned, I noticed my leg hairs were growing more slowly while i was on TCA's.

Hi Michael,

I agree with Bekka regarding the endocrine system. I took Propecia for (head) hairloss and it definitely worked: but I lost hair from my chest, legs etc. over a period of a few years. I became uncomfortable with that and gave it up. Propecia helps prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT and alters the level of both.

I think hormones can both affect and be affected by disorders such as depression, anxiety etc. I recently tested low for testosterone and this may be why Propecia affected my body hair like it did (but you never know..)

Maybe you could discuss with your doc about getting a few basic hormone levels checked. They are pretty cheap tests and will give you and your doc a clearer picture of what's going on.

Have you checked your iron levels. Check these sites and read about hemochromatosis. I have it, and it is very easy to solve, if you catch it at an early age. It is mis-diagnosed up to 90% of the time. It is the most common genetic disorder in North America. It can cause havoc on ones mental health. Please do yourself a favour and read about it and get checked. Hair loss anywhere on the body can be a symptom.

Here are some site to read:
