Can anyone recommend a good psychiatrist in UK?

Posted by Denise528 on March 21, 2002, at 14:50:17

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a Good Psychiatrist in the UK, one that specialises in Treatment Resistance Depression. Although I trust my current psychiatrist and believe he wants to help me I don't seem to be getting very far. I've been going through hell since last June and all he seems to do is put me on a drug, leave me for six weeks, increase the dose, leave it for another six weeks, then put me on another drug and leave me for six weeks. I am now trying Prozac and lithium which doestn't seem to be doing much except sending me into a horrible state of anxiety throughout the day and leaving me drained in the evening. I know I'll be on this for another 4 weeks, will go back to him in 4 weeks time only for him to increase the dose of lithium for another six weeks and try again. I know they are not miracle workers and we can't expect them to just suddenly produce a quick remedy but sometimes I feel there is no way out of this, I feel so trapped. Does anyone know of a psychiatrist in the UK who will give you a drug for two weeks and if there is no improvement at all switch to another drug. I know from past experience that if a drug is going to help me then I should see some improvement (a glimmer of hope) within two to three weeks and I'm tired of playing this waiting game. The last 9 months seems like an eternity.

Hi Denise,

Don't get excited, unfortunately I can't recommend a good pdoc in the UK; I don't live there and have never even visited there.

However, I just wanted to let you know that I can relate to what you are going through - I've been going through hell since last April.

I am also in a horrible state of anxiety throughout the day but then it dissipates and I'm okay in the evening, to the point of insomnia.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to comment on something you wrote to me in my post above in case you don't go back there - it means a lot to me that you said that I sound "together and well balanced" -- without bragging, I must say that basically I AM those things - a together and well balanced person. However, the depression and anxiety are wreaking havoc on me.

I am sorry that you are also going through a bad spell - are you able to work or are you at home like me?

I hope someone here can help you in your quest to find another pdoc in the UK.
Best wishes,
Janelle

Hi Janelle,

To answer your question I am working although just about, fortunately my empolyers have been really accomodating and I've been able to work fairly flexibly. Also to answer another question of yours, I am now taking prozac and lithium, the lithium was supposed to jump start the prozac into working but doestn't seem to have done the trick although it has quelled the anxiety. Like you I used to take Paxil over four years ago and it worked wonderfully, I had more energy, better concentration, laughed more, took life less seriously, my sense of smell seemed to be more acute too. Foolishly I came off the Paxil four years ago, thinking that by doing that I wouldn't develope a tolerance for it and could go on it agaain if I had another episode. Well the episode started in June, thought ok just go back on the Paxil and everything will be back to the way it was before. However, it hastn't turned out like that at all, I feel as though I have been dragged through hell and back. Anyway the Zyprexa this time has been the only drug that has helped me. I am still looking though. Good luck in your search and thanks for asking all of those questions which I wanted to but didn't dare ask.

I'm in the Midlands but am prepared to travel if necessarily. I am currently seeing a doctor in Birmingham, as I said before I like him and believe he really wants to help me. It just seems to be taking so long.

If you both get on well ...(i know there isn't much time at each appointment)believe me they want you to get well and off their hands to reduce waiting list..so what I usually do is wait to see if med is working or not then take some research(not too much) and suggest moving on to new med.
This kind of relationship can only work if you get on well...after a short while

I don't know if your private..but I guess the same applies.
Or I suppose if you're REALLY sure the med is not helping I suppose you could exaggerate the side effects....
Good luck hope this helps somewhat...I'm afraid in uk it does take a long time.

Dreamer,

Thanks for the advice, I never thought of exagerating the side effects, I think that's what I'll do about the lithium, I'll tell him I'm vomiting all over the place, I have just been sick so it's only a slight exageration. I really wish I had an appetite, when I'm well I eat like a horse.
