Bad reaction to provigil!!

Posted by Spongemomsquarepants on March 12, 2002, at 10:47:52

Hi,

I just got out of the hospital. My heart rate was at 166 2 hours after taking this med. I was on a low dose. I took 14 hours to get my heart rate under 100 so I had to spend the night. Problem is this was the first med I have taken for ADHD. I fear any of the other stimunlants would have the same efffect on me. Has anyone else had this problem with a stimulant?

Thank you!

Thanks for telling us about it. I get elevated heartrate from a lot of meds. Pstims and Wellbutrin were probably the worst. TCA's did too (nortriptyline being the least problematic), and then less so Effexor and then even Zoloft to some extent. I thought Provigil had less peripheral effects, you must be sensitive to them. Have you talked to your doctor that prescribed the Provigil? What does he think?

Mitch,

Well I was in the hospital that he practices IN and he never came to my room. (I am a new paitent) My Mdoc was the only one that came and saw me. I called the Pdoc this AM to let him know what had happened and he never called me back. (I am switching Dr's) My Mdoc told me to stop taking it and he thought ritalin or adderall would have the same effect. Confuses me too, but I am pretty new at this.

I took Zoloft for a year without any side effect..(except an extra 15 lbs, that I just lost) It did nothing for my ADD and minnimal for my anxiety, which has been under good control with klonopin 1.5 mg a day.

Can you think of any good questions to ask the new Pdoc I will be seeing next month? He specializes in adult ADHD and was highly reccomended.
Thanks!

Your "Mdoc" probably is correct in assuming that Ritalin, et al, would cause similar problems. If you didn't have any cardiovascular changes with the Zoloft then you might be able to tolerate a little TCA. You might mention to your new pdoc a trial of nortriptyline. Desipramine would probably work better-but it is notorious for cardiovascular side-effects. You didn't say anything about Prozac. Prozac was probably the only SSRI that seemed to help my attentional probs. significantly by itself. Some folks find Effexor to work quite well for ADD symptoms.

I want to tell you a little story hopefully not too late now. I was recently diagnosed ADD etc same/similer age as you. I started taking a 20mg pill of Ritalin SR. I had a bad reaction like you describe and headaches etc. It was awful. I tried cutting them up and taking less amounts but still not good. So I switched to Wellbutrin. Took 1/4 pill at first to get used to it, 100mg SR. anyway after a few weeks I was taking wellbutrin but not more than 1/2 or 1 pill a day. Then I tried taking the Ritalin again in small doses and it was amazing! No more rapid heart or headache etc! Only a feeling of being energized and motivated and focused! Now understand I would only take a 1/4 or 1/2 of the 20mg SR pill. Anymore would still not be good. Not as bad as before but still not as productive as less. I like some people have a higher sensitivity to drugs and so I cut up what would be a regular dose and take less and it works much better. Something to think about. I also take small amounts of Adderal and it works great. I think what happened was the Wellbutrin "primed" my brain to accept it and other similer working meds which were not well tolerated at first.
